I've researched this error and haven't found any campaign coins or others minted like this. I had it tested today using an EDDY current machine with an open probe. The test results concluded that the dash is just as solid as the lettering on the coin. So the dash is still a mystery to me. This looks like a simple chipped die in just the right spot to appear to look like a dash. So do I have a "Anti-American Penny" here?
No idea what an EDDY machine is. It looks like a plating bubble or die gouge to me though, not a die chip.
I want to think it's a die gouge. That would mean a strong possibility of more than just this one out there.
Because it divides the word "WE". As if to divide "We the people". I ruled out the plating bubble by using the EDDY current machine. This machine reveals any cracks, impurities or voids in metal alloys. For this case, it was the dash area. It has no voids. The layer of copper over the zinc is uniformed over the entire coin. Even on the dashed area it is the same.
I guess everything today is anti-American? Kids in school get detentions for praising the US. I live in a world I don't understand!!
looks like a plating bubble there. It could have been something if it were to be in par with the mid line in the letter "E" perhaps.
Well then it ain't anti-American. It's anti - WE, kinda like divorce! Maybe a sign of things to come??
You have a point. Anti - American was not quite putting this into the proper perspective. Because of it's location in the coin, it would say something else. But politics and religion are topics that are against the rules of discussion here. So Markus, thanks for the correction.
Yes indeed - I hear you! Been reprimandid before speak your mind and you are labeled as a racist - label me what you want - I don't give a (can't say it!!)
I have a few cents like this I think it was a break in the die that fell out and then pressed the coin and the metal filled in the gouge
Bryant, can I see a picture of your cents that have this same defect? Are yours exactly like this and are they the same year or from the same mint?
This is what I believe what happened the die was chipped and some of the prices that chipped off are by the E and what also helps me confirm this is the die break on Lincolns head also know as a cracked head and it normally start by the "WE" hence the die chip I edited your photo to help you understand
