To quote from the email I drafted this morning: ELECTRONIC AUCTION 344 POSTPONEDLOTS WILL CLOSE TOMORROW FROM 10 AM Due to technical difficulties with our servers affecting many of the early lots, Electronic Auction 344 has been postponed. The sale is now back live on the site with the closing reset to tomorrow morning, 12 February. We apologize for any difficulties.
Technical things happen. If there was a major glitch, the only fair thing IMHO for both sellers and buyers is to delay the close. I think they did the right thing. Some buyers may wish they proceeded even if the computers prevented some bids from being recorded, but that is simply not fair to the sellers, right?
I recieved a very gracious email from Victor at CNG. They are handling my bid issue fairly. Great group to work with.
It was my first time bidding on their site and I was at work when the auction was supposed to close then I saw it jump time. I understand why they did that but it sucks too because I had the winning bid at the time and since have had to up my bid. boo haha I guess you win some and you lose some...
You never know though sir. In my experience, most lots, (at least the ones I bid on), tend to move up strongly at the very end. Yeah, it sucks, but I very much doubt that if all things were equal yesterday your bids wouldn't have been topped anyway. So many coins, so little money, you have to be philosophical about it. If its meant to be its meant to be. If outbid today, there is always another e-auction starting tomorrow, right?
Its all about the chase, not the acquisition as much to me. I kind of feel a let down once I finally get a piece I have desired for a long time.
The hunt is fun. Especially when you find that EXACT piece you were looking for or better. The other fun part is when it becomes a part of your collection and then you forget about it for a little bit and rediscover it later and then you love the piece all over again.
Yeah, especially the second part. That is the fun of being a hoarder, finding a coin or a pile of coins you forgot you owned. Its like buying it all over again. Just a couple of months ago when I was unpacking "junk" from my old house into the den I just built I found a group of about 85 large byzantine bronzes. I honestly do not remember buying them, but lots of nice F and a few aVF large bronzes. I had a few hours of fun just looking at them, then I packed them away again. I will probably find them again in a few years.
Yeah that is alot of fun. I have most of my really good stuff in a safe deposit box because I have to travel alot with my job and every time I get in there I rediscover some really awesome stuff I forgot I bought. Including some sick toned morgans and a really nice MS64 1883 hawaii quarter and some other really cool stuff I bought back in high school and college. I have one mercury dime in an ICG MS67FB slab that has some out of this world toning on the reverse. I want to eventually resubmit it to NGC or PCGS as im sure they would give it high remarks for the color. Its always like christmas opening that box up.
Its the chase, the deal, the action. I'm addicted to coin auctions. I get the same buzz each time. I love watching the little clock wind down to Hammer Time....you can't touch this.
CNG e-auction e-345 is open now and includes 15 of my coins. Now that I'm focusing on Greek staters of Italy and Sicily, I'm divesting myself of some Greek, Roman, and Roman Provincial bronzes, and a couple of pieces of Greek silver that just don't seem to fit. I've only owned the coins anywhere from 9-13 months, so it will be interesting to see how much I lose! I'll have the results on February 25 and report back shortly thereafter.
=> I totally agree ... it's a bit like a fat chick peeking through the oven-door, eyeing-up the hot fudge brownies (salivating at the mouth in anticipation!!)
