I'm still new to coin collecting so, i wanted to know what is the best coin denomination for collecting. Personally I'm debating between half dollars and pennies. ALL FEED BACK HELPS!! Thanks everybody
Its kinda depends on your spending limit and what you want collect I personally like to collect error pennies and ill get a box to look threw myself only 25$ a box and a better chance to find new errors.
I love half dollars! Modern dollars don't excite me much, but ikes are cool. I guess i like bigger coins!
No real way to answer this for someone else, it is an individual preference thing. You need to collect what you like. Do you like silver? or copper? Do you collect for the historical significance of the coin or time period it represents? Do you prefer to collect for the artistry of the pieces? Maybe collecting coins of the country of your heritage?
The poll options refer to US denominations. So the country of heritage should be the United States. Christian
Dollars because they're big. (I collect tokens and when having to bid on only one I go for the dollar tokens because of their size.)
Why not both? I know that most new collectors start with the cents as those are the easiest to get at a decent grade for a good price. I love the old large cents and think you'd enjoy collecting them, but I also think half dollars have a great spread of types and beauty. There is a very recent article about this that I found to be fantastic: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/my-half-dollar-type-collection.232555/
Like others said, impossible to answer. Now, if you ask, "which is the easiest series to make a complete 20th century set of in BU" we could answer it, or "what is the cheapest type set to put together". Personally, I liked nickels and half dollars when I collected US coins, along with large and half cents. I found quarters to be the absolutely hardest denomination to collect, either a series or type. Only Washington quarters are easy to put a set together, every other series has MAJOR stoppers that will break the bank.
Was easy for me - I like copper best. Everyone should collect large cents. Of course Bust coinage is pretty cool also.
Some lack of imagination here. I suggest: 1 Heller, because it's always good to know at least one. 1 Filler, because it will always fit your album. 1 Shilling, to remind you of Ebay. 1 Real, because we should always stay it. 1 Dong because what's a ding without one. 1 Royal, because it is good to be King for a day. 1 Mace because you never know. 1 Anna, for East Indian company. 1 Bawbee, because it's cute. 1 Broad, for amusement. 1 Angel, for salvation. 1 Dump, to put the other stuff in. 1 Sol, to tell Jewish jokes. 1 Colon, for digestion. 1 As, to wipe. 1 Crown, for when you are Royal. 1 Frank to keep Anna company. 1 Double, for when you want to hide. 1 Quarter, for your share of the pizza. 1 Eagle. to keep your falconer busy. 1 Stiver, for when you need stiving. 1 Mark, to go on your permanent record. 1 New Penny, to be as bright as. 1 Bolivar, to liberate South America (should it need it) 1 Quetzal, because it's a pretty bird. and so on.
I think Franklin half's or a Walking Liberty short set would be a good start. The cent collection has a few high price coins in it
Thanks everybody! I'm gunna go in to the bank on Saturday (once i finish re-rolling my current box) and order a box of half dollars (hope for silver, but not getting my hopes up to high) and get as many penny boxes as i can after that
