It's easy for people like me who started learning it at the age of, umm, zero. But if you think German is a challenge for "English natives", try Polish. And let's not even touch most Asian languages ... Side note: Countries and their names have always "shifted" to some extent. But the Westphalia that Jerôme was king of was different, in terms of territory, from every Westphalia before and after him. Guess he just wanted some familiar sounding name for his kingdom. Just bought this coin. Pic is the sellers. I do not think I take any better photo of this coin. I guess my best offer was good enough and if the seller is a member here I thank you very much.
Christian, I just purchased a very cool Austrian 1868 coin/medallion. I have not received it yet. I have been researching it for a long time and I think it's a German Shooting Festival commemorative issue. The reverse side is hard to read. Numista site has one similar. Could you take a look at the pictures let me know what you think and any information would be great. I think got a good deal no one bid and I believe it's silver. Thank You, Steve
Search for the eBay item 351294036451 or 351310714678 ... Cannot really tell you much about the piece - the upper photo apparently shows the building in Vienna where that shooting festival took place. Such halls were usually temporary. The slogan (rhyme) at the top - Üb' Aug und Hand fürs Vaterland - means something like "train your eye and hand for the fatherland". That used to be a popular motto especially in the late 19th/early 20th century. Festhalle is obvious - festival hall. The bottom left sigs are hard to read. PITTNER, as suggested by that eBay seller, would make sense; that company designed/produced medals. The next one I don't know, and on the right BRITTANIA (sic). As for the other side, well, guns and shooting is not exactly my thing, so I briefly looked it up. The text - III. deutsches Bundesschießen Wien 1868 - means "Third German Federal Shooting Vienna 1868". Here (MA Shops) are some other medals that commemorate the same festival. As for whether yours is silver, hard to tell from the image, but I don't think so. Just a gut feeling. Christian
