Hello all! I know I've been absent lately, but things have been pretty nuts since the New Year. And this is just one story of the madness ... We had an interesting couple of days at the shop recently after the local Telemundo news crew called us up one day and asked if they could come in do to a special on "valuable pennies". "Valuable pennies" quickly became "OMG a 1943 copper penny is worth $100,000 and so is a 1944 steel penny OMG". It was an interesting experience, to say the least. The Penny Madness
Very cool that the Telemundo host helped man the phones after witnessing the chaos their report created. Thanks for posting.
lol i saw the news report that went into your shop on the spanish network. I hope more newcomers come into the game cause i need them to have someone to sell to. pump it up.
Nice to see you back Amanda. I was beginning to think you won a million bucks with your Raven-style poem and bolted for Rio. I think Latins really like Abe Lincoln so it makes sense they would pay attention to their cents. Welcome back.
@messydesk - I know, I thought the same thing. He really didn't have to, and certainly not for as long as he did. It was very sweet. @f35musketddo - I was really happy to see that the public had such a big reaction, and that so many people are looking at coins right now. And who knows, maybe some little boy or girl out there will decide while looking for "the $100,000 penny" that coins are the coolest thing ever. @longnine009 - Haha, unfortunately no million bucks ... but I did get a lovely Columbian expo half dollar!! @jallengomez - The post is still on my blog (and cointalk) ... I took Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" and made it about the Columbian Expo Half Dollar.
Interesting how that happened to your shop. Do you know if any nearby shops also got hit with phone calls?
A New England shop had one of the 1944 steel cents come in and they sent it to NGC for authentication and grading. Within hours of it getting entered in the system they had verified it as real and word got out and there were offers for it around the country. It was NFS.
A LOT of shops across the country got hit with calls to varying degrees. Stacks Bowers got hit pretty hard as well, I had two staff members of theirs call me to talk about it. Even our dear @The Penny Lady® got some!
