Fortuna is an Italian goddess who appears on many Roman coins. Here is an example: Diocletian, 28 mm, Trier mint. FORTVNAE REDVCI AVGG NN I just posted an educational web page about Fortuna under the tetrarchy: http://esty.ancients.info/Fortuna/Fortuna.html I solicit suggestions for improving the page.
Great detail on that Diocletian. I liked your page as well. Can't think of anything I'd improve on it off hand. Nicely done!
My only comment relates to the matter of collectors assuming a coin with 89 varieties being common. I tend to agree with this attitude. Unless you are a specialist in an issue, you probably don't care so much which of the minor variations you have. People might like the left facer or one with a fancy bust but 89 varieties means there are at least 89 dies and the RIC rarity numbers really don't apply at the general level most general collectors find significant. I believe you have a page that discusses the meanings of the RIC rarities and it is certainly true that an R4 because of a wandering dot means a lot less to most people than a coin with one variety, a unique reverse and a high R rating. Rather than mentioning this in passing, I suggest you either explain what form of rare caused each of these 89 to get those ratings and why we should care or just provide a link to your other page where the matter is discussed. I do agree Fortuna is a rare type relatively. I don't have one. I have not looked for one but would have picked one up had I stumbled upon it.
