Sorry about the poor quality. Trying to get use to my new andonstar microscope. What going on with the T thru the D in United and S and States. All those bumps and also Doubling of some sort on the east side of the D and the north side of the ball between United and States. Guessing those bumps maybe common in this series but I have never noticed them like that?

I could guess at some die deterioration as being possible. I'll wait for the others to check in.

It could be die erosion (orange peel effect?) or leprosy.

Chris leprosy was the first thing that crossed my mind

I think it is due to grease the bubbling effect almost rippled

Could you explain how that happens, please?

I said I think, not that I no..in Canadian coins that effect they call it rippled due to large amount of grease being left on die...

That's not die deterioration, not the orange peel effect either. I have no idea what it actually is at this point but I would like to see a clear picture of the entire coin.

What I am seeing is raised (around the TED · S). Anything resulting from grease will be incuse on the coin. i.e. it cannot possibly be grease. I cannot understand how die deterioration could cause the bubble effect I see, but I suppose it might be remotely possible. On the other hand, that is exactly what I would expect the results of a rusty die to look like.

Rusty die ? Won't deny it's possible, but I have never seen a Walker struck with a rusty die (doesn't mean none exist though). And of the many, many, examples of coins that I have seen that were struck with rusty dies, none of them has ever looked like that. That is just weird, and I can't even begin to dream up an explanation - I'm baffled.

I certainly appreciate everyone looking at it. I know my pictures aren't very good. Very curious on what is going on there. I wouldn't mind someone on the forum to get it in hand and take a look at it. I pay for shipping both ways. Anyone want to take a crack at it?

Hey? Pieces of the die were not there when struck. Grease etc. is not the answer. You cannot think of a better answer, so ........

No insult to Doug, but the person you would want to look at it would be @mikediamond. Hopefully he will stop in soon.

Thanks for the info. Doug has certainly forgotten more than I will ever know about the hobby. Hopefully Mike will stop by and see what he thinks.

I believe that's from the planchet, not the die.

It is raised. If it were from the planchet, the die would have flatted it.
