Ben,those are nice 2 Quid silver Britannias.Have you tried looking for the fractionals? There's even a 20 Pence Britannia as well. Aidan.
You have great taste BD... we have the same two designs! The 2001 is very cool... a variation on "Una and the Lion". Still trying to add that one to the accumulation. The 2003 is a "head shot" of the Brittania figure. The reverse design is "standard" in the even years and a one of a kind in the odd years.
Biju, the name 'Britannia' is actually derived from Latin (where the Romance languages such as French,Italian,& Romanian come from),as the Romans called their province 'Britannia',which means 'Britain'.The Roman province of Britain actually consisted of all of what is now England, plus the southern part of Scotland as well. Aidan.
Britannia is the Lady on the coin. No, not the Queen, the lady on the other side. She is an allegorical figure used by the Brits much like we in the US use Lady Liberty on our coinage. So they call the coins Britannia's.
Does anyone know why they repeat the design of the Britannia every even numbered year? 1998,2000,02,04 and 06... Btw, the 2007 coin is awesome!
I have a full set of them to date and absolutly love them :smile I do believe the 1st image of Brittania appeared on a Roman coin :smile De Orc :kewl:
Uh oh, I think Scotty just cost me some more money... :hammer: Add the 2007 to the list! Thanks for sharing!
