I have questions about my $100 CSA note that I hope CT members can either answer or point me to a specialist forum that might be able to help. I’ve attached photos of a $100 CSA note, T41, S/N 120144 that has a name I cannot figure out on the back. I can read “Issued” – then the mystery – and finally “Feb 5 1863” What’s in the middle? A place name? The name of the issuer? Please post your response if you know or advise me of somewhere I can go to find out. Thanks so much. D
FYI, I was just informed that the word I couldn't read was "Jackson". So the note was issued in Jackson Mississippi on Feb 5 1863. Thanks to all who responded. D
There were 678,600 issued. It would help to see the entire note, both sides as this bill was normally issued in Richmond.
Thanks for your interest. A higher res photo of the note is in the attachment to the original post. For quick reference here's a low res copy. The stamps on the reverse are difficult to read; the word at the end is Montgomery. D
I haven’t made out the top stamp yet and I’m still checking the writing. The lower stamp reads INTEREST PAID TO JANUARY 1865. MONTGOMERY. In Alabama of course. Both are Interest paid stamps with the date and place. I do believe both are from Montgomery.
Thanks again for your interest, @Collecting Nut, I appreciate it. From a close look, I see that both stamps have Montgomery as the last word, and that the note was issued in Jackson, Mississippi. Just a week before this note was issued, General Grant assumed overall command, and began his advance down the Mississippi to Vicksburg. And the Battle of Jackson was fought three months after the note was issued.
