Looks like I'm starting a mini collection of Cappadocia Mt. Argaeus coins. This time by chance I happened to pick this up. Septimius Severus, Cappadocia. Caesarea Drachm 193-211 AD AR 18.2 , 2.8g O: AY KAI L CEPT CEOYHPOC, laureate head right R: MHTPO KAICANEΩK Mount Argaeus surmounted by star. ET-IZ (year 17. 209 AD.) Syd. 400 var. And if you think drinking while bidding was bad. Let me tell you, sleeping and bidding is just as bad. I got this by chance mainly because I decided to put in a low bid at the last minute. Turns out, it was the highest bid I ever made in my life. I completely forgot to put in the decimal point on my iPad. You can imagine how much I hoped no one would jack up the price just for the heck of it.
Well, that is a nice coin for sure. Hopefully you didn't pay too much for it. I've been high and made mistakes too. So, don't feel too bad even though misery loves company. lol
It jumped from $34 to $63 in the last seconds. If it wasn't for my lost decimal point I would have lost the auction.
nice IR, that seems like a good price for this coin still. you're not going to regret putting in that high bid.
If you are gathering these, look for bronzes and family coins, too. The year dates on family use Septimius' years so E is 198 no matter whose coin it is on. Some issues show R for B=2. Geta exists but I do not have one. I have not seen all years and doubt a year set is possible. Portrait styles vary in step with the Rome mint coins. Yours shows the normal 'late' beard. AE Domna Caracalla
Nice addition, ice, easily worth 63 bucks. That's pocket change anyway, so even if you had to learn a lesson from it, you got a great coin at a fair price. Win-win.
My only dabbling in this is illustrated below:- Septimius Severus Ar Drachm Obv:– AY KAI L CEPT CEOVHPOC, Laureate head right Rev:– MHTPO KAICAPIACW, Male figure (Argaios(?)), laureate, draped seated left on Mount Argaeus, holding branch Minted in Caesarea, Cappadocia. Year 17, ETIZ in exe. A.D. 209 Apparently unlisted in Sydenham, cf. Syd. #403, which is a matching didrachm of this type
