Back again folks and i am proud to show off my antique mall(of all places)score from today... 1921 PL morgan... has great mirrors and one helluva strike... not the best obverse on earth but i think its atleast a 63.. heres the best part: when i get home from tgi fridays i get to check for zerbe proof die markers... Yes photos suck as i havent even made it home.yet but w that said whatchya guys think???
Yep tjats the only thing i dont like...these 21s and peace dollars are notorious for those spots,,, was thinking bout acetone bath possibly but idk if it will help.... still... i couldnt resist this thing for $40... 1921s are my kryptonite Ps maybe ill get lucky and those spots are on the mylar....
From the photos, I think the marks on the head would keep it back to 62. Perhaps a carefully performed dip would take care of the spots?
but the strike/luster will bump it back up to . 63/+.... not to mention all 3 mints (san fran especially) are graded on a huge curve for this date.... ive seen some butt ugly 63/64 holdered 21s
I've had MS69 ASE with waterspots - they just turn me off! Arent water spots considered distractions from a near perfect surface and if not how can they grade a waterspot coin at almost perfect when there are beautiful MS69 examples without any forseeable distracting marks?
Good point... i cant figure that out either... to me it ruins eye appeal big time.... which SHOULD be factored into the grade
New conclusion.. this is a greaser!! Those are NOT water spots!! This coin was struck thru grease... the left serif of A in dollar is gone
Those spots on the obverse are recessed... i thought pvc damage at 1st until i noticed the.other clues
Btw 1921 morgans are (pun intended)filled with more grease errors than all dates combined.... the mint couldnt care less about quality back then as their goal was to pump out as many of these as they could... 80+million to be exact
Nice find. I sort of still wonder if it could benefit from an acetone bath. Those spots are kind of a turn off to me, even if they are grease strike-throughs. :/
