Has the U.S. Mint ever sent you the wrong item?

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by TopcatCoin, Feb 6, 2015.

  1. This has never happened to me in all my years of ordering. Has the U.S. Mint ever sent you the wrong item or the wrong quantity of an item? If not, have you ever heard of this happening to someone else? I am curious as to how the mint would handle it. TC

In 1996 I ordered all of the Commemoratives. I think it was about 14 coins. I received them and all was good. A few weeks later they sent them all again but did not charge me for them. After several calls and two letters, I could not get them to take them back. I still have then.

Not from the mint but from the BEP. Same thing as Idhair, ordered a set of bills and two sets came. I still have the second set.

    The rest of the story.
Back in those days, each coin was a separate mailing and from different locations. I gave up calling to get it stopped. Each call they told me they were sending labels for return but they never showed. I just let it ride waiting for all the coins to arrive. One of the coins never showed because a neighbor kid took it from my mailbox.
I called the mint again asking where to send the coins and told them one coin never showed up. They said the labels would be sent as soon as possible. No labels came but I did get a letter. This is the funny part.
The letter said something like "We are sorry your coin was lost. We will have a replacement in the mail ASAP"

The only thing I have ever got doubles of is the light bill. I think it comes every 2 weeks and they won't take them back either.

I doubt if any one will believe this, but my husband purchased ONE 2011 AMERICAN EAGLE 25TH ANNIVERSARY SILVER 5 COIN SET was charged for ONE and was sent 5 sets.

He has never spoke of this before, but said I could mention it now. He still has All the paperwork here somewhere, with pics also. He saved the tracking info which clearly shows the weight is too heavy for just one set.

He is such an honest man He wrote the US Mint a letter with all the paperwork & pics, and sent them a certified bank check for 12 hundred dollars for the extra 4 sets. The bank gave him a copy of the check, and also a copy of the cashed check.

He never heard a word from the mint after that. He gave one set to his best friend because he got shut out and could not order one. He saved one to give to our grandson someday, he is his coin buddy and they do coin collecting together. He sold the other 3 on Ebay. True story you guys/gals are the 1st to hear it...

Our grandson was only 3 when they started getting boxes of cents, the 1st time our grandson read the date he read it backwards right to left.

So maybe he was dyslectic and doing this helped him. Or maybe he just did not know how to read a date on a coin? It did not take long to catch on, he knew just what to look for, they saved all the coppers and wheats Canadian or any other non US coins they found in the rolls, and of course the Indian heads.

One day he opened a roll and it had ALL Wheats and a bunch of Indian heads too. He was soo excited, my husband said it was priceless the excitement he showed on his face...

Yes, and they were very cooperative with taking it back, and sending me the right one. This was on one of the America the Beautiful silver 5 oz hockey pucks.

I think I once ordered 2 proof and 2 silver proof sets and received 4 proof sets. The billing was correct for what I received. I kept the 2 extra proof sets and re-ordered the silver proofs.

Not the wrong item, no. Just damaged items.

I ordered a Silver Proof set that I had to return THREE times (each time they sent a new one) because they were all jacked up somehow: Cracked cases, loose coins rattling and scraping against each other... The fourth one they sent was was good.

If I had one of those "street mailboxes" or an external box on my home that wasn't locked, I would NEVER have shipping that didn't require my signature to receive it.
