Okay...thinking of putting together a world 1 oz silver bullion set. The coins need to be issued from the government and the type they use as bullion, not the special issues that are sold by many countries. So what country, type, and year would be in the list? ASE of course...since all are identical, no need to be picky on year Maple Leaf...25th anniversary is a neat design Britannia....which one...2012 is nice, but didn't they switch purity in 2013 Philharmonic Panda Elephant Libertad Others? I am just beginning to learn. Looks like the Kookabura is a great year to year design from Australia.
P.S. This is a bullion set...so not looking for graded examples, or big premiums for limited issue years
Kook is a good choice, also Koala. Would the Hawksbill Turtle from New Zealand mint and Armenian Noah's Ark meet your criteria?
Looking at bullion...so the Koala would count, but much more limited than the Kook...so probably a bigger premium. Turtle and Noah's Ark...will look into those. The commemorative Canada? A standard Maple Leaf is a $5 coin.
I don't know about the year so much, but here is a personal chart regarding the countries: Non-design changing, but well-produced coins-- American Silver Eagle Mexican Libertad New Zealand Turtle (2013 is good, no Queenie on it) Non-design changing and less well-produced coins-- Canadian Maple Leaf Austrian Philharmonic Britannia (the older changing Britannias were much better) Armenian Noah's Ark Design changing coins with very good production quality-- Chinese Panda Somalian Elephant Australian Kookaburra Australian Koala I have been collecting these for a number of years and this chart is a result of my experience, others may have different results. I would get each of these for your collection, just be aware of certain coins not having as much eye appeal as others. Also, if you are interested in potential price appreciation, the coins in the last group have historically performed considerably better in general.
From what I know of the Privy coins, they are almost collector versions....so no, I do not plan to include as they are sold for numismatic value more than bullion. Now I am a beginner in this, so I may be incorrect in how I am thinking about it.
I'm surprised you don't think that the Britannia is a well produced coin? Actually they do have mono changes over the years but not always. The 2015 is slightly different from the 2014 for example. The Libertads, Noahs Ark, US Silver Eagle, Maple, Britannia, Philharmonic are all good to have. The Perth Mint Kooks are nicer (in my opinion) than the Koala - the 2015 Koala looks weird to me. They also do the Salt Water Crocs. All are usually pretty good quality as well. Canada is currently 3/4 the way through a Bird of Prey series. They have wildlife series and 3/4oz or 1.5oz coins also - I find that most coins from the Canadian mint are a bit shoddy with milk spots etc. Some of the rounds are nice. I just had a Gairsoppa that has a bundle of history - and for economy, SIlvertowne seem to have an endless supply.
Okay...here is something I find interesting. In the US bullion is an Uncirculated finish and the Proof is a numismatic premium for the finish. Several of the global coins will use proof as the standard bullion finish.
View attachment 389126 I like it a lot. The mirrored areas make the coin look really nice when having a black reflection...great contrast in the design. Again...quick photo
Received another addition to the run today....Maybe need an older one that is at a lower purity level to show the two types from our friends across the pond
Recent Britannias can look fairly similar from 2012 - 2014. The 2011 is different, but prices are higher, here in UK at least.
Thinking about Britannias - I would think that next year will feature the updated QE head rather than this IRB.
