Hello again. I found this coin and it caught my eye. A friend told me it was from Ravenna instead of Constantinople , is that right ? Also is it authentic and what is a just price for it. Thanks !
I believe it is Ravenna mint: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/byz/tiberius_II/sb0470.jpg Tiberius II Constantine, 578-582 AD. AV Tremissis 1.51 gm. Ravenna mint. Dm COSTANTINVS PP AV, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, heavy annular border / UICTOR TIbERI AVS, cross potent; mintmark CONOB. DOC 64; MIB I 17; SB 470.
I think Gert Boersema has the attribution right. As for price, maybe it's slightly high compared to auctions, maybe not. Check CNG's archives and acsearch.info for comparisons and see what you think.
Don't put much stock in my opinion. I've only recently begun learning about Byzantines. My opinion comes from comparing the two examples in Wildwinds and from seeing Boersema's other offerings, which are usually accurately attributed.
More to the point, I've also handled a real Ravenna issue. http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=209352
You'll need to look at prior sales and decide for yourself. With ancients it is difficult to find a comparison that is exactly the same in terms of condition, strike, etc so it comes down to you looking at similar coins and their prices, then determining how much you like the coin in question. Here are some places to look. I've linked to the search pages for this type of coin although there may be some other coins as well due to the way the searches work. CNG's archives (be sure to click on each tab near the top: Coin Shop, e-Auctions, Printed Auctions) acsearch.info CNG's coins don't seem to be included in acsearch. Between these two sources you can find good sales histories for most coins.
Nice goldie, I don't know the premium for a Ravenna mint Tiberius Tresmissis. But, regular Constantinople mint coins run about $250 to $350 in better condition.
