I have a 1941 penny that was in my father inlaws jewelry box....I didnt notice anything special about it until recently. On the back of it there is VERY tiny lettering (vert vertical) below one cent. A local shop said they had never seen anything like it and said I should have it looked at. The writing is so tiny they werent able to make out what it is. Anyone seen something like this?
There are some coin shops that will say, "I've never seen anything like it before." Translation: Come back when you find a coin that is really worth something! Chris
Well he took a picture of it....its extremely small lettering. The guy could only make out the first letter which he believes is an M
It looks like lamination or PMD, I'm guessing the lettering was just your eyes playing tricks on you.
Welcome lynnh. Let me explain some of the language we use in the error coin world. PMD means Post Mint Damage. It happened outside the mint such as picture #1 of a counterstamp on and old Cent. A lamination is a minor error that occurs when there is a faulty planchet and a strip or a piece of metal falls of before the coin is struck such as picture #2 - hope this helps
Need a close photo to see what it is, jeweler's use small punch marks on their rings and things. maybe this is what it is ?
