Hello all, I have found a 2006 penny with no tails side. I am curious to why this is and also if this coin is worth anything? Any help would be appreciated, Nate
I'll bet it's thinner than a normal cent. The reverse of your coin was removed in some way AFTER it left the mint. It has no extra value.
What is the sound of one hand clapping? Same with coins, two sides MUST be struck in order to strike a coin. Almost always a one sided coin exists due to a lathe after it left the mint. Check the weight. This is why a scale is a very important numismatic tool.
If it weighs the same as a normal cent then you have another issue going on besides a lathe turned coin. get back to us on the weight.
Also, the other side would not be silver colored if it were an error. It was fI led down below the plating.
About weight, there is too much mint allowed tolerance to identify a cent that is ground down just enough to remove the copper plating. If it doesn't have a raised rim then it is mechanically altered out of the mint.
If it is a double head coin then that is a magician coin. If the reverse is flat, then its probably half a magicians coin. You can look up here or Google how they were made. Otherwise, it could just be damage. A coin cannot be struck with only one side, its like the sound of one hand clapping. Do take a pic and post it here. It could be an unusual error, but I have given you the causes of 99% of these.
It can but it is rare. If two planchets enter the coining chamber at the same time it will produce two one sided coins. One key feature though is that the blank side will NOT be flat and smooth.
