I posted about this a few months ago. The article in my post actually has a pic of the coin before it was launched. It was selected because of the significance of the date being 100 years previous to the originally scheduled launch of Curiosity launch.

Cool indeed! That would be an awesome coin to have but it will never be.

 

I don't know... Aren't we planning manned missions to Mars by 2021? I'd bet it will return to earth someday. Not in my lifetime... But maybe my children's.
