Which of these 1940 Jefferson Nickels would you rather have in your collection and why? Please vote in the attached poll for the coin you prefer and give me your opinions on the grade of each coin in the comments. Coin A Coin B Coin C All three coins are raw guys, so have at it!
C looks like the highest grade to me. I want to like B (great color!) but those 4 black spots are turning me off, particularly the 2 on the obverse. I turned down an otherwise nice, red 1909 VDB lincoln due to a similar issue at a recent show. Maybe I'm picky though.
I'll take A. A has better surfaces (fewer marks) and a more pleasing color than C, although C has stronger steps. The spots on B are deal breakers.
The steps on C sold me over A along with this coin not having the 'scratchy' marks in the obv field behind Jefferson. B has nice color but those spots are very unpleasant, so could not even vote for that one.
Spots eliminate B. A may have fewer nicks, but C has better steps and (from your pictures) better luster. I will take C.
I went with C as well. I like and appreciate a nice nickel tone, so liked B and A better in that regard, the spot in front of his face on B would have always bothered me. For A, the steps are weaker a touch, but really made me decide between the two was the light scratches/whatever they are behind the head of A. So, while I normally do not like bright white nickels, I chose C.
I remember when you posted the photos of B the first time (a large group of carbon-spotted toners.) Such a shame. If I had unlimited funds (Powerball money, anyone?) I choose B and send it to NCS. Because...reasons. (Shout out to CinemaSins.) Even with the carbon spots, I still prefer B to the other two, which seem lifeless to me. If I had to choose between A and C, I'd refuse to follow orders and keep looking for another coin (and keep B in my collection until I found a better specimen.) (Also, having seen some of your other Jeffersons, I don't think A and C are nice enough.)
its a toss up between A and C for me, but I'm going for A. I don't like the two hits on the reverse of C even if it has one more full step than A. The color on A looks better for me and the surfaces appear to be cleaner.
B is my choice by far even with the carbon spots. The steps are 5 full as opposed to A which may or may not because of the blend about 2/3s across and C probably will but I've seen some that didn't because of the blend in the upper left corner. All three have enough merit no one could argue if they all were 5FS. B has loads of luster beautiful color and 4 tiny little black spots. A would be second because C just appears lifeless compared to A when you look at luster and color it's just too vanilla. B-MS66* 5FS, A-MS66, C-MS66, again if A & C get FS distinction I'm good with that I just seem to be to pessimistic when it come to the FS distinction being given. I would like to hear your opinion before you post TPG results if you send them in.
I like B even though it's a later die state. The other two just don't have enough carbon spots. How much are you selling it for?
You are the expert, why don't you tell me what the price should be? I will even use periwinkle in the description, think I see some on the reverse.
Voted for A. I like the color on B but wouldn't be able to get past those black spots. It was close between A+C. I picked A because I like the look of the surfaces better. It looks like it was struck from a fresher die. The fields around the letters in United States of America just look strange on C.
I don't know, I don't mess with coins. Honestly though, I don't think they change the grade of the coin.
If you made me choose, I would go with "none of the above, but C is the best of this bunch." A's strike is weak, and looks to be the lowest grade of the bunch. B's color is gorgeous, and would be a clear winner - if it didn't have the spots. The spots are a dealbreaker for me. C has the best strike, but the color is just "blah." Lehigh, your pictures usually seem really bright, and don't usually show luster very well (which may throw people off an otherwise attractive coin). Is there any way to show us what the luster is like on these coins?
