Which of these 1952-S Jefferson Nickels would you rather have in your collection and why? Please vote in the attached poll for the coin you prefer and give me your opinions on the grade of each coin in the comments. Coin A Coin B Thanks for your input, Paul
I would say B just because because of the better detail and eye appeal has more details in the windows and collar on Jefferson, as of A it looks like possible PVC damage rather then toning, as for the grade I have no clue maybe for A MS-65 idk I am horrible at grading that why I don't grade my coins myself lol
This is a tough decision for me. "A" has some pleasant toning, and the slight hit on the cheek bone of "B" is a (small) detraction. On the other hand, "B" appears to have a nicer strike on the reverse except for the mintmark. I'm not well-versed on grading Jeff's.......67 for both, but no FS. I'd have to choose "B" for the overall strike. Chris
I'd give them both a 63 and if I had to take 1, it would be B because the strike is better and I feel the photos of B represent the coin well. The cropping of the rim on A is pretty tight and I would also rather see A in hand before making a judgement. The reverse toning is nice in the picture but in hand I might feel differently about the overall toning. So based on what is given in the 2 sets of photos, I pick B.
I picked A. I really like them both equally in condition MS65 I just like the look of A's reverse and B's Obverse with A being my overall choice. Both obverses have small facial hits and both reverses appear to have marks in the field above Monticello on the left and they could probably go MS66. I just prefer the color of A. Oh by the way I wouldn't turn down either I love the Jeffs. Also two hit below Monticello on B as well. Hey who am I kidding both are real nice examples and if you couldn't blow these pictures up this big we'd all be drooling.
A looks to be struck harder due to impression of his head on the reverse the then B (my choice) witch looks like a better strike and more detail even in the steps witch is a big portion of the grade. To me A does not seem like nature toning it is to hazy and fog like that is why I think it is PVC damage. I would still stick to my grade for A as MS-65 maybe MS-64
A also seems to have some bad striking going on, on the reverse looks to have some MD and weakness in the letters on the bottom of the reverse, where B seem like MUCH better strike and sold lettering
I like "B". the surfaces look better and the reverse has more detail. Paul, you mentioned the deeper contact mark on Jeff's cheek on coin B being a distraction, but I think there are quite a few more smaller contact marks on Jeff's face on Coin A: Couple on the upper cheek bone, chin and a few on the jaw. It's a tough choice because of the toning, but I'd rather have the cleaner surfaces and better struck coin.
B is a better strike However if you could have the obv. of A and the rev. of B together on one coin that's the coin I would pick.
I like the reverse strike better on B but the hit on the cheekbone would bug me. That and the toning would make me lean towards A.
I chose A over B (what I might consider the "cleaner" coin) because it appears to have more luster than B and a little color that helps give it better eye appeal (to me...)
I like the first one better. The color is more attractive. I wouldn't be surprised by 67 for the first, the second looks 66 to me.
Man you are good! Coin A is indeed MS67 and resides in my NGC Registry Collection. Coin B is raw but I grade it MS66 with an outside shot at MS67. I will let you know what the grade is after NGC returns it to me. Thanks for the input guys, I was undecided as whether to submit this coin but the debate is settled, it is going to NGC.
Hey, I don't think it's fair that you allow a professional author on coin grading to participate! I'd like to know the results of submitting the second, too, since I guessed 67 for it. In any case, I like both. Thanks, Paul! Chris
