What makes you believe that this piece is a proof?

Rims look square, and other than the hack on the neck, there doesn't appear to be any chattery marks in the usual places.

If I'm wrong, I can always blame the picture. ;)

I was also wondering if it was a proof because the 1950 proof quarters were not completely brilliant like we find in previous or later years and many of these coins had a satiny feel to them. The obverse rims look like they might be better formed than typical, the fields don't appear to have hits everywhere and the eagle's breast has better detail than is generally present on 1950s era WQs. Of course, at least some of these observations might be due to the lighting and toning. The argument against a proof is that nasty gash on the neck, which is almost never present on modern proof coinage.

I would pass also but just my 2 cents worth I would not own a coin in this condition certified or not just a common date I would not grade it very high not ms or au but I am fussy

I originally thought proof based on the edges but wasn't sure that wasn't just an illusion of a one dimensional picture. I disagree with not owning this one I think it has plenty of eye appeal and I'm sure in hand it looks a lot better they always do well nearly always.

Deeply toned and the luster appears muted. I'm going with MS63 and I agree that a sulfur laden envelope probably caused the toning.

I've seen dark toning on these, many times. None of them look as off as this one. Maybe it's your lighting. AT is my gut feeling, because I can't base anything on red photos with hazy glare coming off the plastic. Here is a dark one...

As promised, I am now going to blame the picture for my being wrong. ;)

Besides, crow's not all that bad if cooked properly with the right sauces.
