Hi just wondering could anyone tell me how i know if a coin in a ring is a half or full sovereign?? Thanks
Greetings and Welcome to the forum. As to your question, the answer is "yes." There are many different size fingers and many different size coins one can make a coin-ring out of, check the diameter. The design of the coin should still be visible on either the inside or outside of the ring. Again, Welcome Ben
to CoinTalk seaneen. I'm guessing that what you see of the design is consistent with both 1/2 and 1 sovereign coins. If that's the case, try weighing the ring. If the weight is between those of the two suspects, or barely less than a normal half, it's got to be a full. If the weight is significantly less than a half, that's probably what it is, as it's unlikely that much more than half the total weight was drilled out.
Full sovereign will have 8 grams of gold in it. However, you can't weigh it if it is in a ring. How wide is it ?
Welcome! Good luck on it. Don't know a whole lot on World coins, leave this to the other guys. Good luck. :thumb: Phoenix
Good point. I was assuming that this was a "spooned coin" ring, where the center has been drilled out and the rest folded over to become a band-type ring. You are assuming this is a coin horizontally set in a ring. If my assumption was correct, weight will tell the tale. If JeromeLS's is correct, diameter will tell the tale. So, seaneen, which is it?
If it is 2.3cm wide then it is a sovereign. If it is 1.8cm wide then it is a half. BV of a sovereign....about £75-£80....as said before, contains 8 grams of gold.
