Looks like they have arrested Tommy Thompson after years on the run...,, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...sure-hunter-appear-Florida-federal-court.html
I read "The ship of gold" last summer and thought it was a very interesting story. I thought the courts had settled the ownership issues back in 2003 but didn't realize that Tommy had not paid his initial investors. The feat of bringing up the gold in 8000 feet of water was truly an incredible accomplishment. I've been pretty deep in a sub but nowhere even close to this depth. Even as deep as I was the environment puts an incredible strain on the vehicle that got you there. 8000 feet in pitch black water to find a broken up ship and recover the cargo without harming it is really something else! I'd put it right up there with going to the moon. There were the best minds back then that said it could not be done with the technology that existed. From the looks of it, it's too bad greed got the better of him!
As compelling as the whole story has been, I still have to go with the Bre-X scandal as the best gold related story of the past half century.
