Good evening all, I need some help with this Ptolemy IV. I’m looking for the type, mint and what does the lettering say? I’m awful with Greek. Thank you in advance!
Inscription reads Ptolemaiou Basileos, "Of Ptolemy [the] King". I don't know Ptolemaic coinage, so can't answer the other questions, but I have a question for you that might help you find the answers: How do you know that it's Ptolemy IV, and not one of the many other Ptolemys? If it's because the seller/previous owner told you so, then they should also know the mint and other info. If you looked it up yourself, then the source where you found that ID (book, website, etc.) will probably also allow you to determine that other info.
Hi @Anubis Dionysus , You should try looking this up at the Ptolemy Coin Project at http://ptolemybronze.com/ptolemy_series.html - Broucheion
The monogram on the reverse seems to be a chi-rho monogram a bit distorted- if that's the case your Drachm is Ptolemy IV no. B395, Coins of the Ptolemaic Empire Vol. I, Part II; Monogram 244 from Catharine C. Lorber, Coins of the Ptolemaic Empire, Vol. I (2018): https://www.academia.edu/40777525/R..._plates_xiii_205_46_plates_ISBN_9780897223560 You can find examples at http://numismatics.org/pco/id/cpe.1_2.B395 like this one: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b103134385
Hi All, I think the monogram is an SE, which would make it Svoronos 992 or 1148 depending on size (CPE 502 or CPE 503). - Broucheion
I believe you got it right. It looks like the SE version(Sv992). The diameter is 44mm and the weight is a little over 72g.
I bought it from a seller on eBay and that’s really all the info I had. Thank you for taking the time to translate for me.
