Looking through my collection, i found an 1889 british penny with small punchmarks. one of them looks like a bust and the others i cannot figure out. please, if anybody has seen this before, please fill me in. my pictures are the best i can do but one thing is for certain; there is.detailing inside the punchmarks
I have no idea. i looked under the microscope and there is reeded or detailed intruncations. i am hoping to solve the mystery soon.
No matter what details you might see inside the recessed area, it is still PMD. I had an acquaintance who retired from the Philadelphia Mint, and he used to make small dies to punch designs on dimes and cents. Chris
There is no doubt that its post mint but for what reason? There is a 100 year difference of what they did back then and today. are you 100% sure? These appear to be of the era and are busts if who and what; i dont know but I believe this not to be damage but a sort of control mark. your answer is considerable but as far as it being damage and nothing to do with numismatics, i may disagree. thanks for your response
Also, these punchmarks have been made for a greater purpose than damage; especially for the era. i could be wrong but i believe these are marks to set a purpose of identifying something
I find it amusing when someone asks about something because they don't know what they have, but will argue with everyone because they know it isn't what someone else says it is. This punch may have some other purpose, but it is definitely not used with coins. Chris
As I am a collector of Victorian pennies I found this quite interesting. At first glance it looks like a keyhole, but that is just my opinion. Over the years I have seen many strange markings on Victorian pennies, I even have some myself. Could this open up a new avenue for study? Watch this space.
