    Please, please...

    ...don't hate me.

Got these three for melt this week.

First is a 1964 D DDO-001. Matches die markers on Variety Vista. Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, date, LIBERTY, designer's initials, and most of JFK's hair. Doubling on WE TRUST is actually much stronger in hand than I'm able to capture it today in photographs...

Now, the next two...perplex me a bit. The surfaces resemble the 2014 Enhanced Uncirculated coins, or the 1998 S Matte Proof...but I'm not sure why. If anyone could shed some light on this (very early die state?) Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST (increasing from L to R), the date, LI - RTY (increasing from L to R), and the hair on the back of JFK's head. I see maybe two small die chips on E on the obverse, slight doubling on some of the L rays and stars over the eagle on the reverse. If anyone recognizes the particular DDO, I'd sure appreciate that as well.

Finally, another 1964 with the same matte (mottled? sandblasted?) finish as the first. Don't see the same die chips on E of LIBERTY, but doubling pattern on the obverse is the same. Don't see the same doubling on the reverse rays and stars, but noticed a slight die scratch or line in the O of OF on the reverse. This is also on the first 1964 P.

Well, the 2006 S is a Proof, if the edge is all silver it is probably a Silver Proof. The 1996 I might guess it's either a chemistry experiment in plating or toning...is it the same on both sides? The other two I'd say would get you a large sweet tea at McDonald's...

I replied on the on the other thread you listed these on but you really need to start a separate thread so these two or three you are on do not overlap each other and take away from the original post. It's the polite thing to do.

The 98-S wasn't a matte proof. As a matter of fact, before PCGS changed their designation to "SP", it was designated as "MS". I have two of them in MS69.

Did you think the 96-D was missing a clad layer? Here is a 2001-D I found in a Mint bag.

    Chris,

I think you got me on the proof part, although many places online refer to the issue as such...but even PCGS uses the words "matte finish" "SMS" and the "SP" designation on the CoinFacts page.

I just checked mine - and I have one of each...an MS69 and an SP70 (both PCGS.)

Back to the two DDO above, what do you think caused them to have this similar finish?

It sounds like you are having fun with Kennedy varieties! Nice pick ups.

The Kennedy series is great for Doubled Dies, but remember it can become “addicting”.

Your two 64 DDO’s are from the same die...64 BS DDO-007, note the common markers from my example, the die scratch SW between the U and R of TRUST, and in the middle of the U of TRUST.

    64 DDO-007 marker.JPG

The finish you see is from quite a few of the 64 BS dies used and shows up on the early die states, note the progression on a 64D DDO-002 in the photos EDS MDS LDS.

Just wanted to update you: NGC has 'confirmed' that the second two are FS-102 (they're listed as "scheduled for grading") - which means the FS-102 population will now be in double digits at NGC (they'd only graded 9 I belive in all grades.). Should know grades soon. :)

I have one in MS69 also. I tend to think grading was tougher then. Paid $100 for mine..last year

@Ethan - what do you mean by "the addiction starts?" I've been cherrypicking for quite some time now lol
