Hey everyone! I suppose I'm having a good month with Walker varieties...picked up my first 1942 DDR at a coin show earlier in the month, today I found a nice AU 1941 D/D RPM-001. PCGS shows a population of 19 from VF30 to MS66; NGC shows only 6 from MS62-66. If anything it's proof that nice varieties are still out there if you look for them. Here are the photos, check it out!
That's pretty cool. Does the variety command any premium? And were you able to spot that with your naked eye?
As far as a premium is concerned, eBay listings show two recent completed listings - neither as nice as this one. I'm guessing it would probably go for about 3-4x what I paid for it. As far as being "naked-eye visible," I usually start out using the loupe by default...so I'd say no. Mint marks are pretty small, you know...ha ha... It was in an album with some other nice coins, so it was easy to quickly scan the MM for RPM.
There was also a 1943 S DDO, but I believe many of the 1943 coins exhibited master die doubling. It wasn't in that great of shape, so I left it in the book. I'll see if it's still there on Monday (and if I can get it at a decent price, maybe pick it up for fun.)
While I was posting about my completed WL Half collection it just dawned on me that most of the coins have never been searched for varieties but that starts to change tomorrow.
