Silver proof sets are following the footsteps of the clad sets :(

Believe it or not, according the book on 20 cent piece die varieties, the Philadelphia Mint received a few of the coins for melting as late as 1954. One older collector in one of the blogs claimed he got one on his paper route in the 1950s.

I got one in change back in the early 50's. An old man selling produce from a cart gave me one instead of a quarter. I was going in the house 5 cents short. I hoped my mother wouldn't be mad. I told her and she said "put it in your coin collection". I've since given it to my youngest son.

There was a time when I had a standing order with the mint for 20 mint sets. I was giving my grandkids one each year. I stopped that some time back.

I am not defending the mint @masterswimmer I am stating facts we are all going through, including our government agencies and departments. I too have not purchased from the mint for over two and half years. I also stopped using the top two TPG's since they were sold. Just my opinion and I respect and thank you for yours.

I still purchase the silver sets; it's in my blood, and I just like them. I don't buy them from the mint though. I just purchased a 2022 silver proof set with 10 coins for a total of $118.49. This also includes shipping. So much for the mint. Regards.

The mint could restructure its offerings across the board, and bring back a lot of old customers. No need to offer five different quarter designs, countless non-circulating dollar releases, and almost commemorate Kennedy halves, all in a mint set that at one time was to release all examples of the coins that actually circulated every year. I love the proof and silver proof sets, but no longer see value in them at the current prices.
