I purchased this sweet addition during yesterday's auction (also under the initial estimate) ... PONTOS, Amisos. temp. Mithradates VI, Æ21 Circa 85-65 BC Diameter: 20.5mm Weight: 11.05 grams Obverse: Helmeted head of Perseus right Reverse: Pegasos grazing left; two monograms in exergue Reference: Malloy 33k; SNG BM Black Sea 1214 corr. (lower right monogram); HGC 7, 239 Other: 1h … Good VF, brown surfaces From the collection of a Southern Pathologist. Ex Classical Numismatic Review XXII.1 (Winter-Spring 1997), no. SP1009 (part of) .... yah, apparently I really like the "Southern Pathologist's" taste in ancient coins, eh? (I have a handful from the collection)
I've only recently seen this type and have it on my want list. Yours has really nice centering and details. Congrats!
whoever this southern pathologist was, he had good taste in coins! that's pretty dang sweet stevex...made me think of this. remember that flick?
=> yup, another CNG addition (I am a big fan of their stuff ... you may occasionally pay a bit more for their coins, but I feel that their product and their peace-of-mind guarantee "usually" leave me feeling good inside!) ... again, it is probably not the best place to go bargain-hunting, but "occasionally" even a blind squirrel finds a nut, my friend Cheers
You don't say what the quote was, Steve. I hope that it was less than the (eBay item no. 221422080290 ) asking price of this Mithradates VI, at US$95,000?
Unless I'm missing something, this is a ridiculous asking price. I doubt the seller wants to sell it. The highest hammer price I've seen on one of these types, for a much better example, was 32,500 plus buyer's fees (CNG 93 Lot 339).
Very nice! Of course I'm partial to mithridates coins. Lol you have a fantastic collection of pontos coins.
