Has anyone gotten involved in the new U.S. Mint offering of information through the RSS, (really simple syndication), where additional information on U.S. Mint activity is going to be made available to the public?
I did a search and I think this is what he is talking about. Not so sure. I don't think I understand what he is asking either. Hope this helps. Phoenix
Well, I was checking the U.S. Mint website a couple of days ago, and I noticed a new "button" on the top of the page highlighted in orange labeled "RSS" and clicked on it. The description by the mint went on and on about this is something new about getting posts and information concerning mint products but that you had to have some sort of reader or aggregator to read them. Was just curious if someone has gotten involved and if it was worth the effort to try and access what the mint was trying to provide in the way of information concerning mint products.
Understand now :thumb: It appears to be something new, kind of like a news service subscription. For those who are fans of mint products it might be helpful to keep them abreast of what the mint is doing and when. But if you're a member of Coin Talk, you pretty much already know these things :secret: This must be a service for the rest of the world
If I remember right, you have a page that you put RSS links on, like a home page... Authors of RSS content put new stuff up and automatically pushes out to your ( For lack of a better term) RSS reading spot... If there a several places you like to get Weekly, daily, hourly, etc, updates from, this keeps you from running all over the place... You go to one cental spot and see all your updates... I found if you http://my.yahoo.com as a homepage or just use it, you can add RDD feeds into it... once added you can move them around or to the top so you see them 1st... Works pretty cool... Edit**Thanks for pointing this out linegrade.... I'd overlooked it...
How seriously can you take an offer when the offeror isn't even sure of the correct name for the "service" being offered? Any computer geeks around who can explain that one for the benefit of us old fogeys?
Thats the problem with the computer world... You can have 10 different acromyns for the same letters to describe the same thing... The mint offers a decent description of what RSS does The United States Mint now offers RSS feeds. RSS, which is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication, is an easy way to get the news you want whenever it is updated, even if you are not on www.usmint.gov. RSS allows users who subscribe to a feed to keep updated on frequently changing content. RSS employs an XML-based structure that includes a title, date, brief description, and a link to the full text of content. Feeds can be read through a program called a news reader or aggregator. There are many such news readers or aggregators available, and they can be found in many locations on the World Wide Web.
I have added the two US Mint RSS feeds to my Yahoo web page. I have many other feeds to this page. If you have a "My Yahoo" page, it acts as an "aggregator" for RSS feeds in addition to others. Once you have such a page, you can press "Add Content" toward the top left of the Yahoo page, then add the URL's from the two RSS feeds shown on the US Mint page. You can access the two URL's by clicking on the RSS symbol on the first page of the US Mint website (which takes you to another page), and then clicking on each of the two feeds at the bottom of this page (and then copying the URS, or just right clicking oni the RSS and then copying the shortcut). I am not going to go into further detail, because I suspect most of you know how to do this anyway, and also because many aggregators have different procedures. As a final comment, I don't see what present benefit these feeds provide, since they are just directing to places in the US Mint website you can access by normal entry to their website. Maybe this will improve as it is improved.
By the way, this very web site has an RSS feed too. The following URL should work with your RSS reader, which may even be your web browser ... feed://www.cointalk.org/external.php?type=RSS Christian
I got not problems with where its posted at... My above statment was supposed to say ""Thanks"" for pointing this out, but I typo'ed and put "thats" instead of thanks for pointing this out... The wife and I were running late for a dinner date with the Monster In Law for her Birthday, so I was in a hurry...
