If you were buying a coin, would the grading company enter into your assessment of the coin and its worth? Should ANACS, NGC, or PCGS be categorized like Ford, Chevy, or Dodge?
Yes PCGS seem to sell for the most so they are my number one, NGC is a close 2nd, ANACS a distant third.
As a collector of pretty much only certified coins I stick to PCGS and NGC because that is all that the NGC custom registry sets allow. However, before I started my registry set I would allow for old ANACS, PCI, and ICG holders when the coins were still decent. There is an old, oft repeated saying in the hobby that you should "buy the coin not the holder," which is generally true. Yet if you factor in the investment factor, and the overall consistency of the grade then you really should stick to PCGS or NGC. The market determines that PCGS is the king on higher end coins, I don't think this is always true in terms of technical grading (in this regard I think they are both similar) but when I factor in the investment aspect I personally prefer the two major TPG's. Given two coins of exactly the same quality I would choose the PCGS coin simply because of the market factor, not necessarily out of a personal preference.
No it wouldn't, only the grade they put on the coin, and the accuracy of the grade enters into my assessment of the coin and it's worth. Some companies seem stricter or more consistent at grading certain series, or offer services the others don't and then you can choose which to work with.
Pcgs and ngc like ford and Chevy and dodge (trucks only) anacs like some of the imports quality but not top end. The rest off brand on down to yugos
Ignoring market forces and dynamics is foolish. For many years PCGS and NGC have been the most liquid, and sometimes only liquid, services in the industry. Certainly, individually nice coins, which represent individual data points, can be found in most any holder. However, the market notes a difference and there truly is a difference in grading standards as each service uses its own, proprietary grading standards. Buy what you like and understand, but attempt to keep an exit strategy in sight, too.
Im working on a NGC only type set so Im partial to the brand. Although i try to buy the coins not the slab. I must factor in the cost to crossover holders.. I personally can not stand the look of PCGS's current slab. From my limited first hand experience. I believe PCGS is slipping and NGC is Moving up the ladder. And another note. Every time I have sent coins to Anacs in 2014 they were way under what i was expecting. I see Anacs gaining ground back to the big 2 (PCGS/NGC) if they continue to grade so strict and if they get a holder that looks worth a darn.
I believe this is flawed thinking. To my knowledge, there has never been a TPG that has regained widespread trust and market share after pillaging its brand. I don't see ANACS being the first. Certainly, they have some followers, but you are tilting at windmills if you think your observation of undergrading is going to get them widespread traction.
Guess I'm tilting then. Ive seen current pcgs blue label coins over graded and problem coins in problem free holders. Now I know with volume some will slip through. I just believe they have slipped a little and NGC has closed the gap. The market should show that in time. Grade consistent. Design a nice holder. No reason why Anacs could not make up ground also. To agree with you some... Will I pay PCGS or NGC money for a Anacs coin Nope not at this time Will I send coins I want top dollar for to ANacs Nope Do I think they are headed in a forward positive direction. Yes.
here is a couple of examples of NGC holders crossed to PCGS holders and a major price increase. of course who really knows why the prices jumped up. sold for 17k 2012 http://coins.ha.com/itm/bust-half-dollars/half-dollars/1817-3-50c-ms64-ngc-o-101a-r2/a/1166-3221.s sold for 61k in 2013 http://coins.ha.com/itm/bust-half-d...7-3-50c-ms64-pcgs-cac-o-101a-r2/a/1187-3153.s another example of the crack out game. sold for 94k in 2014 http://coins.ha.com/itm/standing-li...s/1927-s-25c-ms65-full-head-ngc/a/1204-5594.s sold for 258k 4 months later (grade increase) http://coins.ha.com/itm/standing-li.../1927-s-25c-ms66-full-head-pcgs/a/1208-5578.s
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say those are outta my league if they were graded by Mrs. Osborne my first grade teacher.
Agreed I think ngc more consistent. Anacs would help theirslef if they had better looking slabs. God I hate that curved top and bile yellow label. Icg nice looking slabs tho I don't own any coins in their slab and have never bought any
Personally do not like the NGC slabs - the 4-prong holder/insert dealy allows some coins to 'tilt' in the slab. Looks cheesy.
I would prefer NGC in world coins, especially for chinese coins. But for US coins PCGS is first choice generally said.
