If I spent six months looking for a coin, I feel like I would know it the second I came across it. I think you should keep looking but to answer your question, I like the '73 better.
The 1873 is more eye-appealing and has far more detail on the reverse. I have to wonder why it's not graded, though. Make sure there's not a filed rim somewhere, although nothing jumps out at me to indicate such a problem.
In my mind, there's no contest at all between the subject coins. The 1873 is a higher grade coin, is far more original, and has no more surface disturbances than does the 1871 . . . look harder at the poor images of the 1871, and you'll know that to be the case.
Amen to what @ToughCOINS said. I would wait for the right coin - it should be graded and have more eye appeal than those coins.
I saw that one earlier. I need to be able to see at least *most* of the word "LIBERTY" in the shield. (Yet another criteria I failed to mention earlier ;-)
I73 ofiginal nice and eye appealing the 71 flat boring and lifeless even tho graded I don't think justcthe pics either I think the coin as lifeless in hand. I wouldn't own it but the 7: 3 I would sorry my posts so bad tonight I literakky can't feel my hands hardly dye to my nerve problems in my weists
I'm not saying to buy the 73, but definitely don't buy the 71. It's unattractive and not something you'd be happy with in the long run as a type coin. A type coin should be something special. Something that really 'pops' for you when you look at it.
Well, a quick tally tells me that almost 15 of you prefer the 1873, three prefer the 1871 but with some hesitations, and some prefer neither. My gut is telling me to wait... again. <sigh> Would it make any difference if I could get the 1871 for under Greysheet? Then at least I could always turn around and resell it if it doesn't work in my Type Set.
No hesitations. The 1873 is a really nice coin. Don't worry about what you can sell it for, if you want to collect it, as it is a great type coin.
The 1873 all the way. The 1871 to me has a flat dead washed out look to it. The 1873, yeah maybe it has a little gunk, but it also has character and nice color and contrast. Toss in the much lower mintage and to me it's a no-brainer even at the slightly higher price.
I'd wait for a nicer one. if the images of the 71 are accurate it's a pretty dull "flat" coin; the 73 just looks too pockmarked for my taste although I prefer the color & crust. patience, you will find "the one."
If the 73 cheap buy it and later upgrade. The 71 would have to be like $250 I just don't like it or want to own it
Sorry bout my earlier post that was really awful was trying just my hands went completely dead I could feel tingling but not really my right fingers think I gave up trying to post after trying to type that one. Today my hands not to bad. At least auto spell check can decipher
If i had to choose, I'd buy the '73. It has much more eye appeal to me. The '71 looks like it died by over dipping. There's some great advice in this thread about patience. I'd follow it. If YOU'RE not 100% sold on either coin, which I don't believe you are because you started this thread, then don't buy either of them. If you buy one, you'll be happy you filled a slot, but in the long run, I don't think you'll be happy with the coin. You'll then likely want "an upgrade" and go through this same process AGAIN. Why not just cotinue looking?
Good advice wait for a better never fails when your looking nothing there and when your not everywhere. I want a chain cent when I got dough for one nada when I dont one shows up
