1939 Jefferson nickel doubled Monticello variety. Both are graded AU55. One from PCGS and one from NGC. If you were going to keep one, which would you choose?
Just looked this variety up in the Cherrypicker's guide and I really need to start paying attention. $100 coins and I'd have put both of them in a vending machine.
It seems like the doubling is a little more clear on the first one though. Maybe it's just the lighting.
He probably means they aren't attractive or that interesting and he would spend them like I said I would. I would only care about them for the potential profit to spend on something else.
The surfaces on the NGC are much better and the luster on the PCGS is much better. Personally, I think the PCGS coin is ugly as sin and would take the NGC coin all day and twice on Sunday.
Agree, what luster there is. Agree with this too, but that's really a taste issue. That said, if we look closely at the details of of the building we can see that the PCGS coin has a bit more detail remaining. Thus I believe the PCGS coin has less actual wear. If it was me deciding, that just compounds the issue, makes it harder to decide. So Agilmore, you are the one who has to decide which coin best suits your taste, not somebody else's.
So now you can understand my dilemma. Since I am getting an even split on answers, I will keep the PCGS. I tend to favor PCGS coins and they are easier for me to resell Jeff's when the time comes. I also got the NGC for $10 cheaper, so that will give me a little more profit. Thanks for all the replies!
I have to go with the pcgs #1 the NGC has no appeal looks un natural. As yes the pcgs coin is grey it looks natural . Having sold a MS-66 I prefer a more natural looking coin would never pull the trigger on coin #2
