That's it, just had to look away....and do something else other than try to figure them all out...which dates had which varieties and which dates had both and.....akkkk! This is what I'm talkin' about
Yea, when I first started, I did a Dansco 7070 with good to extra fine examples. It is a great way to learn the history of our coinage. I remember trying and getting all of those seated types, even though they all look a lot the same. I haven't gone back and started any seated albums; that 7070 was enough for me.
A lot of stuff in the seateds was one of our longest lasting coins 2 weight changes a motto drapery no stars etc and on 6 denominations
At first! Wouldn't you love a no stars quarter and half. Gobrechts original design is hard to beat. Only bettered in my opinion by the draped bust trade dollar and st gaudens $20
And a lot wrong, depending on the denomination, or at least that could've been better from an aesthetic point. Fine coins nonetheless.
It doesnt help is that, at least in the Red Book, they include both "no drapery from elbow, tilted shield" and "drapery from elbow, upright shield" as the same variety.....THAT'S TWO VARIETIS!
True, but i am stuck visualizing my sweet little seated quarters, and she is like goldilocks.......just right.....
The way I see it for the SL varieties is this: Half Dimes - 5 Dimes - 6 Quarters - 6 Halves - 7 Dollars - 2 26 coins!!!
I come up with 6 half dimes. No stars, stars no drapery, stars w/drapery, arrows at date, no arrows lighter weight, Country name moved to the obverse. Seven if you include the hollow stars on the obv 1859 only.
Hmm, I missing a half dollar? I show 25 coins. H10C Liberty Seated Half Dime, No Stars H10C Liberty Seated Half Dime, No Drapery H10C Liberty Seated Half Dime, Stars H10C Liberty Seated Half Dime, Arrows H10C Liberty Seated Half Dime, Legend 10C Liberty Seated Dime, No Stars 10C Liberty Seated Dime, No Drapery 10C Liberty Seated Dime, Stars with Drapery 10C Liberty Seated Dime, Arrows 10C Liberty Seated Dime, Legend 10C Liberty Seated Dime, Legend, Arrows 25C Liberty Seated Quarter, No Motto, No Drapery 25C Liberty Seated Quarter, No Motto with Drapery 25C Liberty Seated Quarter, Arr & Rays 25C Liberty Seated Quarter, No Motto, Arrows 25C Liberty Seated Quarter, With Motto 25C Liberty Seated Quarter, Motto, Arrows 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar, No Motto, No Drapery 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar, No Motto with Drapery 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar, Arrows & Rays 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar, No Motto, Arrows 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar, Motto 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar, Motto Arrows S$1 Liberty Seated Dollar, No Motto S$1 Liberty Seated Dollar, With Motto
The CSA Half maybe? That'd be a strict requirement on type collectors edit - I figured it out methinks - The no arrows, no motto 1856-1865 halves edit2 - nm, thats just the same as the no motto, drapery already listed. so it could be 6 or 8 if you want to consider the weight changes along with the device changes
A date/mintmark undertaking of Seated coins is a horrendously difficult task with many incredibly scarce coins and some coins downright rare. Buying for type is really a great luxury as you get to pick and choose what fits your taste and budget.
I am buying for Type. And luckily, the 7070 Type set (on the NGC Registry) doesn't get quite that insane with the subtypes. It just has the major subtypes. Any more than that and I think I might go crazy (especially since many of the earlier ones are very difficult in PL).
