picked up a couple of budget ancients. here's a rough provincial i couldn't say no to for the price. provincial, has serapis and good legends...sold. philip ii mesembria, thrace pentassaria(?) 244-246 ad 26mm 12.7g o: busts of philip and serapis; M AR IOYLIOC PHILIPPOC/KAICA, R below r: athena; MECAMB RIANWN Moushmov 4032 and some recent post here of elymais coin forced me to get this example. yes, all you folks who have posted these lately. IR. DS. i'm lookin' at you. i'm not sure on the attribution...could use some help. seller has this as ordes iii, but THINK it is ordes ii. anyone know? here's my story... Elymais Orodes II 2nd century AD AE Drachm 17mm 4.2g O:Bearded facing bust; crescent and anchor to r. R:Aramaic legend around bust of Belos. Van’t Haaff Type 13.1. and who is this belos cat? a babylonian god is all i come up with. but check out that bust? he looks like a worm with horns. close up with different light... anyway, i didn't get this coin fro cheap..but reasonable. i thought the bust looked pretty darn good and it was well centered, despite missing a bit of anchor.
Elymais attributions are a moving target. Yes, the latest research (Van't Haaff) has this as Orodes II.
Nice coins, who is IR? As far as attributing the Elymais goes, Doug may be better right now. I just ordered the catalog and should be getting it sometimes next week.
awesome additions, chrsmat (bravo & congrats!!) I like "both" of your new scores ... sadly, I don't have an Elymais example (*sigh*) ... ummm, but I think I may have a cool Phillip II & Serapis Æ Pentassarion kickin' around here, somewhere? ... ah yes, here it is!! MOESIA INFERIOR, Marcianopolis. Philip II. As Caesar Æ Pentassarion AD 244-247 Diameter: 27 mm Weight: 13.73 grams Obverse: Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip II right, facing draped bust of Serapis left, wearing calathus Reverse: Serpent coiled left; E (mark of value) to right ... great new coins, brother (congrats)
Nice coins, both of them! Whenever you can get a provincial with that much detail and clear legends, it's a no-brainer. I have Philip I and Otacilia Severa with confronting busts, from Markianopolis, Serapis on reverse. One interesting facet of these provincials is how the legends wind around. Your coin and Steve's have legends that run counterclockwise and continue in exergue from left to right. This coin has an obverse legend that does the same, but with two lines in exergue. The reverse runs counterclockwise and when it runs out of room, it continues in the right field from top to bottom...
... and Serapis is on the reverse rather than the obverse ... (that's a cool coin, JA ... the vertical letters on the reverse are also very interesting ...*edit* oh, that's where you state the legend continues ... yup, very cool) Curious that Chrsmat's cool coin doesn't have an "E" on it (the mark of worth) ... hey, let's shun him (good plan?)
Hmmm, could be? But his sweet example is fairly similar in weight to my example ... 26mm versus 27mm 12.7g versus 13.7g Hey, but I don't know enough to "ever" put my foot down and claim that I know much more than "cool coin" I like you guys
