What effect is this?

Is this environmental damage? Corrosion due to acid? Something caused by the Mint? Just harsh cleaning? It looks as if it has a coarse, bead-blasted finish. I see this on some of my coins. Here's an example of one I found doing CRH on a 1969 D Kennedy. Thanks in advance!

Looks like corrosion from the ground, and then harsh cleaning. Got an IHC with similar damage.

I think OP means the CUD(?) on the mint mark, not the surfaces.

No, I think he means the surfaces. Thus why he said "it has a coarse, bead-blasted finish"...

You omitted part of what he said, "It looks as if it has a coarse, bead-blasted finish"... and that changed the meaning. Looks can be deceiving. Back at you...

And there is something going on with that mintmark.

He was obviously asking about the surfaces...how can a mint mark have a course bead-blasted look to it? :p Not to mention the references to acid, corrosion, etc...befuddles me how you would interpret that all to be a question about a silly little mint mark. :banghead:

What is that 'glob' on the mint mark? Can you answer to that? That is what I referred to. The surfaces I have not and will not judge by close up pics alone. Hit your head harder to see if you can get it working again.

Looks like a run of the mill die chip. Not rocket science.

PS- you answered a question never asked by the OP. Maybe you're missing that point? Lol

    1) NOT a cud.
A cud MUST include the rim.

    2) PMD to the MM

No, I questioned what it was. No harm in that and I assumed PMD was more than 99% likely to be the verdict in this thread but deferred that to others to answer. Not that you could at all!

    And apparently not correct either.

Says who? I am quite certain that is a die chip on the mint mark...

Frank says. :D PMD to the MM. I assume that would be the case and agree since he provided his insights.

Post mint damage doesn't add metal to a coin. The only feasible way that blob of extra metal is there is if it was a chip out of the die. I don't really care what Frank says (whoever that is).

Really can't tell by the single image if metal is added or not. Read the thread carefully and you can figure out who Frank is. At least that should be possible for you to get right.

The MM took a hit & the "extra metal" is just displaced metal.
