Does anyone know if there are any good coin dealers in Dublin? I would like to contact one of them & try to get one of the Irish commemorative 2 Euro coins that are coming out as part of the multi-national 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome commemorative coinage programme. If you can help,I'd greatly appreciate it. Aidan.
Doug, that is where the source is for the Irish Euro coins are.I thought it might be easier to get in touch with one of the dealers over there,& hoping that they would be getting the commemorative 2 Euros in on the first day of issue.I also wanted to offload 15 Euros in cash that I've had for a long time while I was at it. Aidan.
Chard is one of the largest dealers there is in Great Britain. If anybody would have them they will. Did you click on the link - they have the Irish Euros.
Doug,I clicked on that link. There's no mention of the Treaty of Rome commemorative 2 Euros that are coming out around the 25th & 26th of March.I did find a list of dealers on www.goldenpages.ie (the Irish equivilant of the Yellow Pages),but none of them have contact email addresses though.I can guess that I will just have to resort to the old fashioned pen & paper method,& send off a letter by airmail to one of them. Aidan.
Phoenix, yes, that is the coin.It will actually be inscribed in Erse (Irish-Gaelic) instead of English.I would be very surprised if www.muntplaats.nl had them in stock on the first day of issue. Aidan.
The mintage of the Irish coin will be almost five million, so the price in that eBay sale seems a little high. You can pre-order the coin (the pieces have not been issued yet) for less - problem is the shipping fees of course. This is what a German dealer for example will charge http://www.emuenzen.de/verkauf/kat89land309.html; the coin is listed at the bottom but cannot be ordered yet. Low price, but even within Germany shipping+handling is €4.50 per order ... Kind of funny, by the way, that the "generic" design presented by Mr Juncker and Mr Almunia last year was in English - and now none of the coins has any English: As you mentioned, the Irish coin http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/euro/notes_and_coins/images/2007tor_ie.jpg has an Irish/Gaeilge inscription. And they use a neat font - much like what Ireland uses for the country name on the circulation coins. Christian
Christian,do you think I should try writing to the Central Bank of Ireland to see if I can order the coin.I can get the contact details off www.centralbank.ie . Aidan.
Could help, yes. I don't think the Central Bank mails any "raw" coins to collectors, so they will probably recommend buying some kind of set. That could be this year's second BU set, but AFAIK Ireland will also issue the €2 piece separately, in a coin card. From what I have read, about 10,000-20,000 of those cards cards will be offered a little later, in mid-April or so. Both the set and the card will cost more than face though. The raw coins should be available at face value later this month - maybe you can get the raw coin from Irish members of www.euroswapper.com or similar places? Christian
Why Dublin? Because the coins come from there. Have no experience with Chard, and they may otherwise well be a reputable dealer, but that eurocoins.co.uk site is kind of odd. Images of "Irish" coins with common sides that have never been used on the coins, nothing more recent than 2004 ... and, on the pages for other countries, a strange mix of actual coins and medals/fantasy issues. Christian
Good to know. Just checked out http://www.chards.co.uk/coins.html and some of the pages there, e.g. the one about sovereigns, do look better. Asking them about that €2 commem cannot hurt, but as I wrote, problem with these inexpensive pieces is the high shipping cost ... Christian
I've had an email from a private collector in Ireland. He will be getting the Irish Treaty of Rome coin, but he is going to get a numismatic syndicate together to buy the Irish Treaty of Rome coin in bulk. He has also promised to get me the coins that have been issued between 2003 & 2006 as well. Aidan.
Aidan, I think the Muntplaast is accepting orders now.. I got a mail from them asking me to order it if I'm interested.. You can order through their email. The price is shown as 69 Euros for 17 coins (Rome special). I dont know whether they would accept orders for single coin. Their mail ID is : order@muntplaats.nl
Biju,69 Euros for 17 2 Euro coins is very dear. There will also be a dear shipping cost added, considering that New Zealand is a lot further than most countries. Aidan.
That high price is mostly due to the Slovenian piece which has a relatively low mintage (400,000). So people who want the full set, including all five German mints and the coin from SI, will have to pay quite a bit now. For what you want, that offer from the Irish collector sounds much better. And if you have to wait a little ... so what. Still better than having to pay an awful lot. Christian
