Tetricus I AE Barbarous Radiate, 10mm, 1.0g OBV: Barbarous radiate head of Tetricus. REV: Rider on horse advancing left. REF: None. This coin is my first coin of 2015, as well as my very first radiate barb. I got it for a decent price as well. $1.25, that's all. I just had to have it since I really like the crude style of the coin. As some of you know, I really don't like auctions much but that is how I got it.
You can find some very distinctive busts on these barbarous radiates, and your coin is a good example.
I can't say I see the horse but I do suggest buying any of these with original types rather than copies of the official ones like Pax and Spes. The odd ones are more scarce.
Cool green colour ... neat addition If I really squint my eyes and then tilt my head a bit and eats some oats and then cry-out a shrill naaaaaayyyyyyyy, I can almost imagine a horse on that sweet reverse, my friend!! you rock => great score (welcome to 2015)
Looks more like Pax or someone standing left, right arm raised holding something. With a panther behind her walking left .
now I can see it .... oh, but is that a horse chasing the panther? => naaaaayyyyyyy!!! *edit* ahahaha ... TIF, I thought you were merely kidding about seeing that reverse (man, you dudes and dudess have great coin-skills) ... bravo
Haha, awesome photo mods TIF. Yeah, I'm glad a few others can see what I was talking about with horse, but looks like a panther now. lol I am revising my attribution for this coin for sure. Tetricus I Æ Antoninianus. 271-274 AD, 2.1g, 19mm OBV: IMP C TETRICVS P F AVG, Radiate draped bust right. REV: PAX AVG, Pax standing left holding wreath and scepter. REF: RIC 100, Cohen 95. This is my official Tetricus I with a Pax reverse. Photo is somewhat mushy looking because it's from a scanner. Planning on reshooting soon. Thanks for the comments, guys.
I find it interesting that the Gallic rulers have very few animal coins (Postumus has a Castor with horse that is super rare but what others???). Gallienus has a ton of animals but his horses are all half something else (centaur, hippocamp, pegasus). Someone could to a thesis level study on the use of animal types going in and out of fashion over the time of the empire. Why did Probus use so many more horses than rulers before and after him? I'd figure all emperors would want to cater to their cavalry.
