Morgan dollar die crack possible doubled die.

I was going through eBay and found a 1887 Morgan dollar. I looked closer and saw 2 die cracks on the obverse and some on reverse too. Then I saw some consistency in the letters of E Pluribus and some markings on the coin. Is it a doubled die error and how much would it be worth.

The auctions is live so I cant give a link but pictures are here. The die crack on the obverse is north and south of the date near the rim. On the reverse the die crack is across united and states. For the doubling look left of the L and right of the P you should see what looks like a ghost image of an L. Same with the first U in pluribus only on the right. Am I imagining things?

Die cracks on Morgan dollars are very, very common since 130+ tons of pressure is needed to strike them. They don't add a premium to the value unless there is substantial metal displacement.

I can't tell what the mark is between the P & L because the photo isn't very clear, but I don't think it is doubling.

Those are die cracks and it extends to "America" on the reverse, but I can't see any doubling from this photo. Not sure if this would bring a small premium if it were listed on the slab tho. I'll let some others grade.

 

I agree with the others that die cracks are common and won't add a premium . Also the pics aren't clear enough to tell about any doubling . I don't collect Morgans , but is there a VAM for doubling for that date and mm ?

 

It looks like a ghost image on the letters between the U and R too.

 

The ghost image kind of only focuses on the top of the U and bottom of the L.

 

Your photo is just not good enough to tell what is between those letters. You need to take a photo with either a macro lens or a microscope.

You CAN post a link to a live listing, as long as it is not yours, if you wish to do so, but since I assume the photos are the same, it might not help much. Your other option is to spend some quality time with VAMworld, who is your friend if hoping to pick them.

His feeling were made rather clear with the last go-round, and is why I suggested another option. It is not that I blame him in the least...

I have seen some like this at my local coin shop it is not a DD more of a MD due to the high pressure they had to use to strike the coins die cracks happen all the time and starts causing the coins to shift and giving it a doubling look.
