Ive been specifically looking for bonds with many/all coupons still attached. Ive got quite a few already, these bonds were usually owned by super wealthy, and didnt collect interest until maturity, and were allowed to keep the bond intact, that is my theory at least. Or they never collected (doubt it) These are the bonds ive received with full or many coupons still in tact lumber.JPG port authority.JPG rail.JPG rockaway.JPG us steel.JPG

I'm back in town and here is a full sheet of bond coupons, as promised (or as much as my scanner would allow). I was wrong on a couple points. These bonds usually paid interest twice annually, although some did pay quarterly. And the number of coupons per sheet varied. The ones shown here from CCC&SL RR came 50 to the page -- it just depended on how long the term of the bond was.

The last coupon on this bond was number #200, which paid off in 1990. You can see these coupons were paid in November and May, so twice annually. So it was a 100-year bond, issued in 1890.

Where do you tend to find these selling?

If you mean bonds with coupons, you'll find them everywhere. They are such common attachments to bonds that ebay sellers sometimes don't bother to mention them or include images. But many do -- try a search for "bond coupon" (include description) in the Stocks & Bonds category and see what comes up. :) Just to be clear, though, stay away from unattached coupons, even in full sheets. Here's what Terry Cox has to say on the matter; he's a lot more eloquent than I am: http://www.coxrail.com/coupon-chopping.asp

Thanks. That's interesting that they don't mention or include images. I hadn't known that was the case.

the field appears so undercollected its amazing what prices are. I got 5 bonds signed by hauge from jersey city, one of most famous mayors ever. Bond issued to rockafellar, 1897 hoboken ferry owned by lehman, so far, ive got 2 http://www.glabarre.com/item/Set_of_3_br_14_x_17_Albums/1760/c64 of these filled up so far, spent 1500 bucks, same amount i sold a silver cert for 2 weeks ago. I appreciate the history behind them a lot, ill be showing them to all my investor friends over the years, some of my jewish friends are already hooked along with me lol

Good old Frank "I Am the Law" Hague -- I have one of those bonds, too. :)

So, while I support your enthusiasm for this area of collecting I'd like to suggest you do some homework before pouring a lot more money into it. As they say, read the book before you buy the coin.

Your first step should be to join the International Bond & Share Society -- they have been around a long time and that's where you'll find a lot more collectors and dealers to connect with. I don't think you'll be saying this is an undercollected field after that.

LaBarre is an impressive dealer -- he has some fantastic items in his stock. But he is also among the most expensive. I would suggest looking through the stock of Clinton Hollins. He's got some great stuff, too (often the same as LaBarre) but much more reasonably priced. There is a WHOLE LOT of this material on the market -- take some time and be selective about what you buy. It's not going anywhere.

Whether or not you like railroad stocks, take a deep dive into Terry Cox's railroad certificate website. Just reading up on all the info there will answer an enormous number of questions for novice collectors. It's a wealth of information.

Lastly, *the* major annual stock and bond show is coming up this weekend not far outside DC. I've always wanted to attend this, but it's on the opposite side of the country from me. If you can make it, this is probably the best place to educate yourself and talk to other collectors and dealers.

Those would be my starting points. Do some research and let us know what you learn!

wow thanks so much for the info i really appreciate it, i might drive down to dc Friday, id love to see the existing collectors and learn. I bought 5 items from Labarre from ebay so far, he sent me catalogs for free, so far on avg i paid 20-30% the price he is listing in catalog. Like the lehman cert i got 1897 he lists at 450, i got it 80 bucks, i havent spent more than 100 on any 1 cert, and im focusing on bonds, they were much less likely held by public than stock certs, most held at custody banks, which as previously mentioned are going to all be destroyed.

Ive gotten 2 bonds above 1m denomination so far, a jc penny 2.1m issuance and forgot the other

Over 10 bonds signed by politicians hand signed, under 40 bucks each.

If you go, take some photos to post and bring back your stories!

Just be aware that there are dealers out there with big stacks of material in warehouses. That stuff is *not* being destroyed, so the supply lines aren't going to dry up any time soon.

Which day is the best day to attend? I'd like to go on Friday, but will go on Saturday if more dealers will be there.

I've never been, so I can't offer an opinion. But having just been to FUN in Orlando I can say at that show, earlier was better. A lot of dealers had closed shop by mid-Saturday. The stock and bond show is far smaller, though, so I'm guessing any day would be fine.

    Take some pictures, Mike!

Snow is predicted here on Saturday so I'll leave right after rush hour.
I believe it's about an hours drive.

Greg, I'll take plenty of pictures!

I have a few stocks and bond certificates but I am not aware of any value of them. Do they have any collector value?

Short answer is yes, there are collectors of this material. But it really depends on many factors -- age, scarcity, demand. If you'd like to post some pictures here we might be able to give you an approximate value. You might also search eBay for "stock certificate" and see what comes up.

Arrived 11:30am at the Bob Schell Stock Certificate and Bond ( Scripophily ) Show, CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL-DULLES AIRPORT,2200 CENTREVILLE RD , HERNDON, VA 20170.

The show was held in one of the conference rooms in the hotel. I did my usual walk around the room checking out dealers before buying anything. Frankly, it was a bit overwhelming because I realized I would not be able to check out all of the stock before it was time to go. (snow was predicted that afternoon and I had a sixty five mile drive home).

My first stop was Scripophily.com. I could've spent the afternoon browsing through their stuff. They gave me some bookmarks so I was able to mark what I wanted to buy later on.
Next I stopped by Tom Larea's table, He has two online stores - scripophilyTrader.com and Vig.RubyLane.com.
Again, a very nice selection of certificates. Bought four certificates. Tom encouraged me to join the International Bond & Share Society, www.scripomotion.com, which I did.
He suggested I next visit www.clintonhollins.com. Clinton's tables were located near the front of the room in the middle. He had a very very large selection of certificates. Bought another four certs.

Why talking with a vendor that specializes in European certs I learned Bob Schwartz, from Archives InternationAL Auctions, had a table at the show. He called Bob over and we talked for ten minutes. He asked me to send him pictures of my currency and some of my certs. I had talked with Bob several times by phone so it was nice to meet him. Interesting guy he's a licensed dentist. I wonder if he gave up his practice.

Then just made the rounds checking out the other vendors. More and more certs. One vender has some nice medals and currency. A couple of postcard vendors. I bought a racy postcard from the 1920s.

One vendor occupied about one third of the back wall of the room. They only sold certs at two prices - $75.00 or $125.00. One of the women working there was browsing other vendors' stock, then buying some to sell at the $75.00/$125.00 table. She did this for the entire two hours I was at the show.
At the show was the first time I noticed the selling prices penciled onto the margins of certificates, even on certificates selling for $349.00. Bummer, IMO.

Because snow was predicted in the afternoon I left at 1:30pm. Besides, I hate driving on 495 during rush hour traffic. It never did snow.
