Bought this 1857 Flying Eagle on ebay last week. I really wanted on with a CAC sticker, and this was at the upper end of my price range. Received it today, and noticed the obvious clash marks. I know zero about these varieties, so I took a quick meander through PCGS Coinfacts for some pics. Staring me in the face was the Snow-9 50 cent clash variety! Do you think think this would be worth getting attributed by NGC? I would lose the CAC sticker, but my local dealer is a CAC dealer, so he can resubmit. Thoughts on this find?
Nice pick up! That's a $900 +/- coin there. Variety obv. Clashed die (with Liberty seated half. PUP cud in America URS 10 I 5 L 5 LoL sticker was worth anything they would of picked up on the clash. To answer your question yes I would summit it for the variety forget the green bean.
CAC doesn't look for unattributed varieties of coins submitted. Odd you don't call out the previous owner or the TPG... OP, awesome find!
Yeppers....big time like 80% more! This specimen in AU 50 is a $ 600. Coin in MS 62 $1200. So in AU 58 I would guess 900.00 +/- neighborhood . And my references for values is out of date so I would lean towards the higher value. Unless population takes the values lower.
I don't see the need to have the variety shown on the slab unless you plan to sell it anytime soon. It is a well known variety that's really cool. A friend told me if NGC uses the same cert#, CAC will give it a new been for only a small fee.
Are you looking at the $20 clash or the $0.50 clash variety price? I know the $20 is around that price you stated. NGC has the $0.50 clash in the $400's. I won't complain either way though.
First congratulations again you got a good eye for varieties and nice coins. Your coin is as listed in the CPG as an FS-01-1857-402 (003) that's (MAD-003) snow 9 PUP apparent retained cud through America It is the seated liberty half "not the $20 gold liberty head" My CPG is 5th ed vol. 1 the guide shows your exact coin as pictured. variety in Ef. $250 ,Au.50 $600. , MS-60 $1,200. Normal in Ef. $150.,Au.50 $300, MS-60 $500. Now that said if it was the $20 gold Au.50 $5000, MS-60 $15,000. Again my guide is 2009 printing . And pricing may be in the +/- area. However with yours being a Au 58 I say $900-1,000 range.IMHO
You may want to check the two major TPG population on your grade. Never the less I'm guessing you paid $150-200 for the coin. And I'm guessing at two to three times of what you paid your smiling like a Cheshire cat I would be ya not only hit a home run the bases were loaded!
I wish I got it that cheap. Au50-AU53 grades go for about that price. Once you hit AU55-AU58, the price jumps. Plus, I had to fight to get this one since it had CAC. It's one I may have overpaid slightly for, but was worth it.
I see you use the same sniping strategy (slight random increment over "round" price) that I do, and it worked for you this time. Congratulations on the inadvertent cherry-pick! Recognizing it after you've bought still counts!
You are right about these sniping strategy. I learned that on here not long ago. It looks like it helped win this one because my original bid would have been the same as the other persons
That's really an amazing find--considering its visibility and popularity (how did CAC miss that?) Big congrats!
