I was at my local coin store and they had several pcgs graded walking halves for sale. I have been slowly putting together a graded short set and bought a couple the problem is that I forgot that I already had a 43 s that I bought in an auction so now I have two. I'm thinking about selling one so I can buy another date, but I kinda like both coins they both have pluses and minuses. The ngc graded coin is a 64 I,m sure strike held it back but the fields are almost proof like probably why the star. The pcgs coin is a higher grade with a great strike for a s mint with a nice satin look. What's your thoughts, which one do you like?
I voted neither because the contact marks on the head of both make the coin unattractive in my opinion. I wouldn't grade them as high as they were, or I'd shoot for one with marks in other locations. Happy collecting.
I'd keep the NGC until I found a replacement. It's not like a girlfriend. She'll cost you money whether you like her or not. Get rid of her and save the money until you find another one. Chris
Why do you trade both of this coin for another one with a better condition ? See if your local coin shop will do that for you ? Like others have said above, yes the hit marks and the soft detail on both coins doesn't look very excited at all.
The PCGS piece has a better strike especially in the head area. The luster looks better on the PCGS coin but I wonder the reason that NGC gave the star? I'm guessing it's most likely close to proof like? Can you elaborate on that.
I like the strike on the pcgs but not the mark on the head. I'd sell both and buy a real nice ms 66 or a better 65 and likely you have some extra funds left over too
Both are better than average strikes for a '43 S. I prefer the PCGS, but it would depend on the prices.
I agree, the PCGS strike is nice (Eagles feathers look great and Liberty's head has some detail). I would keep them both but then I have hundreds of Walkers and love the coin. If I had to chose the PCGS is the better of the two. If you have the money watch for a PCGS MS66+ (in the $1500-1700 range) and you will get a better coin. For now enjoy the two you have.
I agree regarding the strike. A lot of times you even see weakness in the stars on the cape in addition to typical areas like the left thumb and head. That being said, I saw a 43s MS65 recently that was softly struck but just dripping with luster and had some nice golden rim toning. I would say it's a far better piece than either one you have, so my real advice would be to keep looking. If you want to keep one of your coins in the meantime, and sell the other, I'd lean toward keeping the PCGS coin as it's pretty clearly the better coin.
Since you own both, I'm making the assumption you need to keep one. I personally don't like the head on either coin, but I'd stay with the NGC coin. I don't like the spotting on the PCGS coin. Especially the spot on the sun. Seems it had an improper rinse. I'm also going to take your word on the reflectivity of the fields on the NGC coin.
