Took the best pictures I could. Thoughts on the grade of this coin and possible value? As always appreciate any feedback.
Clear rub on the cheek, plus a possible scratch on the reverse- beneath UNITED. So, I'd go AU, details. IF that is a scratch.
My thoughts were AU as well. I noticed the check rub and figured that hurt and I think it is a scratch from being in circulation from what I can tell. Other than those two issues, I thought it was a very nice coin. I have one other 1908 Indian $5 which I got from my grandmother that I will post later this afternoon. I am new to collecting and trying to grade a coin is not the easiest yet. Just been looking at what the book describes and looking at graded coins online to pick up on the techniques of how to grade raw coins.
If you are interested, both online or if you can use the App on a smartphone, you can try PCGS' Photograde to help you learn about grading.
I just downloaded the PCGS Photograde App yesterday. Looks like it'll be a great tool in grading series on the fly that I am not that familiar with!
I have the app too. It helps with circulated coins, which are harder for me to grade. Nice quarter Indian! An iconic coin design.
"D" mintmark on the reverse to the left of the arrow. I'm being a littel harsh at XF-45 details, because of rev. scratch & I see something in the field just above "G" in GOD. Maybe bad lighting from the pics
+1 light rub can be clearly seen on both sides, but I don't think the "scratch" warrants a details grade
53 I think they'll let the scratch slide as its circulated. I have an awful time trying to grade these by the way
Here is the $5 Indian I was talking about earlier in the discussion that I was going to post. I think I got a little better pictures of this coin than I did on the quarter Indian. I'm thinking possibly high AU grade to maybe at best a low MS grade. Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.
Hard to tell from the pictures of the half eagle but there seems to be quite a few marks on the coin esp. Indians cheek. Does that mark above the 'AM' on the reverse extend into the coins edge? It could be the picture but the star on the obverse closest to the Y and the eagles left shoulder looks kind of odd; could be wear on the shoulder perhaps. There also seems to be a lot of space above the United States of America and below the Five Dollars on the reverse which is sometimes a marker of counterfeits.
I am all but certain it's not a fake. The weight is dead on and I took it too my local dealer and also a pawn shop and both offered me money for it. I don't think they would have done that if it's a fake. Unless they were wrong. I don't trust the pawn dealer but the local coin dealer seems very knowledgable from all my experiences with him. I acquired this piece from my grandmother and she got it passed down from a relative.
