I put in a very low bid and won this "coin" because I quite liked the monogram. I have not been able to find anything similar, can anyone point me in the right direction please? These are sellers pics. And obviously I don't know which side is up.
Whether Greek or Roman, I don't remember. But I'm sure it's an interesting and well-known coin. It might not be a monogram though. Hope more experienced members would clarify the issue. Good Luck..
Thank you 7C, I hope so too. It looks an interesting little thing, it would be nice if it does turn out to be an actual coin.
@Pishpash, you're new to CoinTalk so may not know that Ardatirion is a cataloguer for CNG. If he doesn't recognize it, that is noteworthy.
Now that IS interesting TIF. @Ardatirion Nice to meet you, I will take especial notice of your posts.
Not got it in hand yet, might turn out to be a lead seal or something, it will go in the "curiosity box". I'll just go look for a paddle......
Well, not every apparently ancient coin is ancient, or even a coin. But the reverse does look vaguely like a Byzantine monogram...
The obverse seems very common to me. I even remember being offered a similar one for sale, by my same seller. But I abstained from buying because I didn't like it. There are no figures of kings or gods or even animals. I remember it had the same circle and the wings around. Almost similar to the widow's Fils of Judea. I then remember seeing it posted here on CT and noticed its importance By the commenting members. So I regretted for not having bought it. Anyway, it might not be exactly the same one which is posted here. Remember JA that a very similar coin was issued by the ancient Greeks during a transitory period of reign where power or Authority was absent for a certain time. Always.. That's just coin Talk... Nope. A seal would have a channel running through the center for a string. And I have seen hundreds of tesserae - the fabric is completely wrong, not to mention that monograms are actually a fairly scarce theme. Nothing. Just put it aside and wait to see another. Every collector and dealer has a box of mysteries like that.
I wonder if it could be one of the Indian empires? The obverse reminds me of the sun coming up over a hill ( I have a good imagination ).
This was my first thought too, though I cannot find a match. Some Indian coins have a "Dharmachakra" - a Buddhist wheel symbol that looks somewhat like the obverse above...although they seem to usually (not always) have fewer "spokes": http://coinindia.com/MAC4727.2-Achyu-130.23.jpg http://www.rajgors.com/lotdetailssold.aspx?LotID=809&auid=3 http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php?topic=28913.0
