    Thanx Phoenix :)

I wasnt trying to be nasty or anything, so hope it didnt sound that way. Its just that with anything you collect, damage takes its toll on the price. I have a whole bucket full of those old red rose tea figures. Years ago insurance estimated the value at 500.00. Nice little sum for something that was basically free in a box of tea. I know though, if they get chipped etc, value will be squat.

Hey..I got another 1951 D wheatie from the cash drawer at work and a couple 1956 canadian pennies :)
Someones been cashing in oldies, so Ive been watching closely.

Hamman..LMAO at your damaged 2 cents

Your welcome. :smile I don't think you were sounding nasty. I think you had a good point. Nice finds. I love finding wheats, especially love finding silver. Keep your eye out, a whole lot more out there.

I'm glad you said it, I didn't want to.But only as far as people being so damn picky. I must say that I've been collecting for years and this forum is an excellent source of information and fun to just navigate thru. At least once a week I learn some new little tid-bit about coins or the hobby itself, all from other collectors. I'm still old school tho and pretty much just use the old grading system I learned as a kid.
    it's beat - (P-G) its ok (VG-F) it's nice (VF-AU) it's really nice (shiny AU) it's Unc (ms-60) and Gem BU (ms65+)
It was so much easier than. If you wanted an uncirculated Morgan you got anywhere between a MS60 and MS65 (by todays standards) I'll let the investors worry as to whether it's a 61 or a 62 or a 63. To me it's an uncirculated Morgan (or whatever) and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay more $$ to get a coin that someone I never met in someplace I've never been says it's worth more because it has a microscopic less amount of wear on it. I don't have much use for TPG's when it comes to circulated coins. I will admit that I do favor TPG's when it comes to cameo proofs or keys & raritys tho. but that's just my preference. In my opinion if collectors had their way there would be a 10 point grading system (more econmical and less whining = more fun) and if investors had their way they would try to get it up to an hundred or more. I just waitng for the decimal points to come out. Than the "investors" could say this MS65.325 Morgan is worth $20.00 bucks more than that beat up MS65.275, c'mon it's only $20 more for a higher grade, don't you want the best?
If people want to be overly picky, let them it's their coin and their money. Now if you excuse me I have a really nice 1917 Lincoln that I think I might go look at under the full moon, facing North, while smoking a cigarettte, drinking a fizzing soda while wearing a hat and two left shoes. It probably won't even be worth a cent after that. (Just Kidding,.....I'll probably be drinking a beer)

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a red rose wade figure? And what is a white poodle? I've never heard of them. I'm guessing that is good though! Sorry if I sound stupid.

I have been a collector for over 40 yrs., but I sure wish I would have bought 50sets of the 1999 silver proof sets at about $31.50 a pc - total ($1500.00). Lets see they would be worth about $17,000.00 today. Not a bad return for 7 years. Here's a mind bender for you! I bought six sets of the 2001 silver proof sets and I haven't sold one yet.

I am in it purely for the love of the hobby. Many people who are not investors are still interested in knowing about grading, cleaned coins, damaged coins, and e-bay rip-offs. because even if your doing it just for fun, you don't want to pay more for a coin than it is worth.

There's a scene in "throw momma from the train:"
billy crystal: "Are these coins worth anything?"
    Danny devito: "No"
billy crystal: "the purpose of a coin collection is that the coins are worth something."

To be honest what difference does it make as to why you collect coins, yes even if you buy for investment you are still collecting and will proberly pick up the bug as you go along LOL So some folks make a few buck or a living through coins is that so bad?? and yes we have had a bit of excitment here with the discovery of various errors on the Washington $ but that all adds to the fun :smile People will allways talk with a bit of pride about there latest aquisition be it a car, tv, gun whatever enjoy the moment with them be happy for them

I admit I collect AND invest in coins. I need to make money on the side some how. Nothing wrong with that. If I need to sell someting to buy something else, I most certainly will. And if I make a profit, great! I do have coins I will not sell because they are too beautiful, especially deep cameo proofs. Peace out.

At least I think I am a collector - yes I do track my coins and every now and then I price what something I have might sell for. I have actually sold exactly one coin - 1/2 oz AGE that was all by its lonesome and yes I made a small profit on it. I buy a lot of stuff directly from the mint - so that means I have probably just as much that I have lost money on than made money on.

And when I post a picture of a coin I expect people to be honest - so if they say cleaned and tell me why they think it is cleaned then I might learn something. So people who post pictures ask for opinions should not be offended when they are told, cleaned, dipped etc. It also does not mean they are correct - a coin in hand is different than in a picture. I do know in some cases in order for me to own a coin it will probably have to have some kind of problem. And no - my scope only goes to 200x, but usually 60x is good enough. I have found that this saves me eye strain - the only way for "me" to see some of the diagnostics is with my scope. :)

If I thougt I could buy 10k worth of coins tomorrow and flip then for 11k I probably would. All I know is that I do not have the knowledge to do that.

    Investor / collector

With a portfolio most use to say diversify for an even return. Hence many bought coins. Some not just coins but quality coins for growth. I did it for a hedge, and I am partial to good art ( eye of beholder ) . I do not sell any coins, and have been a net buyer for a lot of years but I collect more the last twenty years then ever before. I still do not know the fine points but I enjoy the coins.

I think that a collector is an investor he just dont want to relize it!! lets say a collector bought 2: 1909 s vdb in ms-65 10 years ago.. for 100 dollars(lets just say) and somebody came up to you out of the blue and offered you 2500.00 for your spare your telling me that you shouldn't sell it?? human nature will sell it to make money!!!

I think that some of the things that are pointed out on this board are to help you with your collection. If I can learn from others mistakes or points I will! If there is a pic of a coin and other people say that it has been cleaned and explain why then I know what to look for.. ect

I have put together a complete set of walkers, did I make some mistakes? lots!! didn't know what mechanical cleaning was. ect..but know that I learned from the people here! I have a nice set of unaltered walkers in my collection
