I believe it was graded a bit generously by the TPG. The seller is asking less than Greysheet, so they must realize this.

Going by completed auction values, I have a number that I feel the coin is worth (at least according to the market right now).

    What do you think the:

    1) grade should be
    2) price should be?

    Thanks.

It has a bit of rub or cleaning done to observe AU50 is what I see. TPG Genuine could be the grade. Price $550.00 is prices I have seen .
    if grade AU 50 $750.00 - $1250.00

I like the looks of the reverse better than the obverse. I don't like the spotting on her right arm and the black spot in the right field. The black spot is the first thing that attracts my attention.

I'm thinking this coin is XF and is about $450-$650. I would hold out for a nicer coin. I'd only be willing to pay the low side of that range.

    It was graded by ANACS

    Is this an "old" label?

Yes, old white slab... most people love them.
I would say AU50...? Nice original coin.

Baggy obverse I'd say xf 45. Their either way over or way under. I like the reverse but not the obverse

Honestly I wouldn't own this one it doesn't appeal to me at all. If you really want a nice seated dollar it pays to be picky and if you have to pay a bit extra for a great one then save a little more. Better to have a coin you'll love forever then one you want to upgrade after a week

Agreed with other posts the rev. is much better than the obv. However I see some small rim dings, rev, bad hits on her right arm. The color of the obv. Has no eye appeal at all. Spotting really takes away from a coin that has plenty of meat but no appeal ! I like the old ANACS holders but I'll give it a Xf. Details. Value $ 500. If my budget was in this price range I hold off for a better coin or price point .

I think it's an OK 40. The obv has a number of hits on the left and I'm not so sure about the right obv field (?cleaning). I would not want to pay over 400-450 for this particular coin, and if I were looking for a type example I would keep looking as it is by no means rare.

AU-50/53 with 53 being a bit generous. Not terrible looking but not great either kind of meh in my opinion.

    ANACS gave it an AU50.

The seller has it listed for $635.

    http://www.executivecoin.com/p-5922...anacs-au50-decent-eye-appeal-nice-strike.aspx

    Greysheet for an XF40 is $475, AU50 is $800.

Completed auctions at Heritage validate: PCGS/NGC are highest, then ANACS.
I see most ANACS AU50's going for $650 (NGC or PCGS adds at least $100 more, sometimes $200+).

However, if this coin is actually more of an XF45, suddenly the prices drop to $550-$650.

I love asking these questions here, because I'll get honest opinions from a lot of people. The answers were varied; some thought it has been cleaned, others didn't (or an "old" cleaning that has toned over perhaps).

I appreciate everyone's advice; I'm going to hold off on this one as well and wait for a nicer example for my type set.

@ksparrow , you said that it was "by no means rare", but I'll be darned if I can find a nice example anywhere! If you know of any places that I've missed, please let me know! ;-)

Looked at ha a real original vf 35 1870 not at all a bad coin and an xf 40 1871 be nice without afresh scratch on right obverse field. Both nicer then this even lower grade tho good original surfaces on both check em out even if not for you this is the look of coin I prefer both cheaper then this too looked again really like the look of the 1870 for the grade bid at $385+ bp

I had my eye on that one. It *is* a nice coin, and I bid it up to where it is now, but I'm not sure it's worth another bid... up to almost $450 w/ BP...

Glad you held off on the ANACS coin. My comments had nothing to do with the holder and everything to do with the coin.

As for the coin you are bidding on at HA, I find "A" coins for the grade will typically garner a premium. For me, I don't care. I'm more concerned with the quality of the coin and am willing to pay for it. My thinking is that when the coin goes back on the market, it will be easier to sell and likely also get a premium.

I'm with Joe on this one. I pay very little attention to price guides on a lot of quality coins. I buy by eye appeal and originality. Those coins nearly always bring more money. Their also the first and easiest to sell. If I bought this one I'd try for a cac bean on it too. Would add to the resale. I'm not surprised it's up a bit and may bring a bit more. Worth it in my opinion. Likely bidders are either dealers or advanced collectors that recognize this as a better then average coin for the grade. I wouldn't get carried away but I think $500-525 is not out of line
