I love when the seller says "not a coin expert." Yea right. There are a few but the majority are trying to sell to what we want.
The die details match up correctly for a S-76b, but something was giving me a "hinkey" feeling about it. Then I saw the edge pictures. Flat squared off edges?
Reminds me of the really good fakes from China I have been posting about recently. At least the surface appearance does.
I would be terrified of spending that much money on any raw coin unless it was bullion. I would assume that there is a reason why it's not in a slab.
I think it's ok. Is not a cast fake and the Chinese haven't got the edges on pre closed collar strikes right yet. I'd love to own this one. And the reason it's likely raw is its in England and many us coins were brought back there as souvenirs early on. Including at least 2 1794 $1 Likely how this survived tucked away in a desk drawer for 200 years. Considering the coin and where it is I'd have taken a shot at it then immediately sent to ngc. It seems others had the same idea
The 76b should have plain edges, that isn't a problem. And I know about thick planchets that are supposed to have lettered edges that miss the lettering. But neither type should have flat squared off edges. The edge on this coin looks like something that was very well struck in a plain close collar.
