Roman Christian Symbol

    In this bronze coin of Emperor Gratian, I can notice a cross over a globe held by the hand of the Emperor. These were among the early Christian symbols used on Roman coins after the access of Constantine The Great to power. I wish someone could elaborate on this matter which dates back to the dawn of civilization . Thanks.. Grat R.jpg Grat O.jpg

    I think you will find, that the cross you see, is actually part of the throne behind the seated figure (Roma I think).

    Globus crucifer is a common find on Byzantine coins. I agree this is the back of the chair but when was the first use of the real globe with cross?

    Did some digging and the earliest one I could find was a gold tremissis of Arcadius RIC IX 37B Milan.
