So, a simple Guess the Grade is boring. Here, I'm going to let you guess the Coin. Identify the Country and Denomination of my recent FUN show NEWP, and then guess the grade as well! Good Luck!
Moroccan 2 falus, always liked these coins. Tricky grading crude cast pieces, but looks at least mid-grade to me. Patina makes it hard to tell, but these are often actually much higher grade than the TPG's give them.
I was close. I dont collect this material so I was winging it...I do not care for the look of cast coins. Too crude for my taste.
Most collectors I know would share your sentiments on crude coins. I think some types are sort of charming with their crudeness. Like some early Central American coins, which are some of my favorites.
Great guesses! Yep, it is a Moroccan 2 Falus. Any time you see the Seal of Solomon on a coin, you should automatically think either Israel or Morocco. I'm not entirely sure why Morocco uses the 6 pointed star on all their coins, but they do. NGC graded this one VF-35. That seems oddly specific for a coin of this type, but whatever. I'd probably just approximate the grade as EF (which is actually a really good grade for pieces of this type). I saw it in a dealer's case for $20, so I figured what the heck. I don't know why anyone would bother slabbing this piece, but they did. I'm quietly putting together a Moroccan set (although, I'm mostly focusing on the later, machine struck coinage). Anyways, I thought this was a fun piece, so I figured I'd share it.
