Last Sunday I went to one of the many coin shows around here. Minimum of 3 a Month. This one is in a place called Countryside, Illinois. As usual I go to these shows with nothing special in mind but take a list of coins I sure would like to replace in my collections if the prices are right. They seldom are so I usually come home with a few magazines. The admittance is free, parking is free, coffee is expensive and not worth anything except cleaning out a sewer. Front table as usual had free copies of Coin World, Numismatic News, World Coin News, pamphlets on upcoming shows, some candy, etc. I took one of each and put them in my car. As usual about 80 dealers and still most setting up at 9AM. Finally sat down by one dealer I know and said not interested in anything, just resting. He then pulled out a Mercury Dime Album, Washington Quarter Album, said he just purchased them last week and so far no one else has seen them. Every single coin was in MS something or other. Every single Mercury Dime in MS60 or better including all of them. Sure wish I had the money but I made a list of the ones I thought I could afford and so did the guy next to me. Weirdo had pretty much the same list I had. I was first but he may have been a better customer and sure had more money. The 16D he grabbed for $6,000. He took the 27D I wanted but I did get about 10 of them for about $1,000. A few Washingtons in the early 34 area and time for me to go home and bar-b-que. The dealer told me he bought the entire two sets for what he just got for that one Merc Dime. After that I walked around looking at coins I should have, could have, would have bought but the cash flow was gone. This coin show is one of the farthest for me to travel to at about 12 miles. Next sunday there is one about 10 miles but only about one third the dealers. That same dealer with those Merc's will be there so I may have to rob a bank or something for more money unless they are all gone.
Don't want to pick on ya there, too much, but, um . . . Coincidence? [dang! the smileys won't work for me -- insert grinning smiley here.]
Just Carl, I thought that was a well done report. I was especially fascinated reading about someone buying a 1916-D Mercury dime. That's my dream coin, which I will never own. And I hope you will continue to post your adventures in coin-show land. I hope you won't mind if I make a suggestion. Paragraph your story next time. Every three, four or five sentences, press "Enter" twice. That breaks a big, forbidding block of text down into bite-sized paragraphs, giving the reader's eye places to rest. If you do this, I believe that you will have more readers and that they will be more likely to read your whole piece. And when I say press "Enter" twice, I don't mean to do it blindly. Follow the logic of your text. There are places where it makes sense to start a new paragraph. Just Carl, I'm sorry to give you advice you didn't ask for, but as a lifelong writer and editor, I just can't resist trying sometimes. I have good intentions (and I know what the road to hell is paved with). Thanks.
Wow! Just hearing those words "MS 60 or better Mercury dimes" makes my heart leap with excitement! Wow! Must have been an awesome show. Just out of curiousity, what are the dates you got? Awesome report! Phoenix
Gunsmoke you know who you are telling this to right. and Carl thank for the report hope you did not have to take your gun to the show. Bruce.

hmm...well I dont have one of these in any date..lol Ebay on the other hand, seems to have lots of 1916D at various prices. I think I will just stick to finding oldies/oddies in my change..lmao With my luck, I'd buy a replica
I second all that! The 1916D is also my dream to have and only MS will do. So I am pretty sure I'll never own one either. Thanks for share the experience from the show. I love to hear about this stuff. Next best thing to being there.
WHOA! Now my heart is racing! Very nice! Is that yours or just a pic you found? Still, very nice! Phoenix
to: vipergts2 Not only the 1916-D, but with full split bands on the reverse--including that tough middle band. I'm stunned.
Carl, What do you think the 16-D graded? If it was truly an unc, the buyer got an excellent price at $6,000. Regardless, I bet that dealer made a sizable profit on those sets. Nice show report by the way.
finest The page I found it on said that was the highest graded by PCGS, I would bet it might cost a few cents.
I'm still trying to get over the idea that 12 miles is a long way for you to travel to a coin show! There is one in that radius all year, and it's the one that our coin club holds. After that, get out the 75 mile radius... Nice report, thanks for sharing.
Viper, I know what you mean. It doesn't surprise me that it is the nicest PCGS graded. I'd pay a few cents for it. Did the site say what it graded? Very nice. Phoenix
