This is going to sound mean, but its not intended to: you bought an ugly dog, and paid a strong price for it. Return it if you can. The piece is very low grade, badly scratched, and has clearly been holed and plugged. If this is what you want and are happy with it, then great for you I guess. However, if you are looking for a nice gold dollar and bought that one because you were growing impatient: consider this a lesson learned. Have patience.
I agree. I've sold a number of holed and plugged gold dollars with detail FAR nicer than the one above for $85-100. Buy it now.
Hate to say it, but not a good deal. Here are a few examples of better for less, or about the same. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NGC-AU-Dama...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1851-G-1-Go...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1853-1-DOLL...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
why feel rushed to buying a gold coin if you will not like it in the future. this is a hard lesson to learn, but in the end you will be much happier with a nicer coin. start saving now. do not feel bad. I had to learn this lesson when I first started collecting coins about 16 years ago. my coin dealer always told me buy what you can afford and then when you are ready or saved up enough money to buy higher grade coins. he was right. in the end I started saving up for better grades or upgraded to better grades. much happier now.
Patience is a virtue for sure, but I'm happy for you if you are happy with it. But never get caught up in the frenzy of a bidding war on something like this, because inevitably something nicer will come along-always. I'm currently watching several rolls of 2009P Lincoln cent errors and will wait my turn. If they get too high I will back out.
you want a good laugh ? I bought the capital plastic type gold set thingy. and yup no gold coins yet. lol I think when I have the money I will start with the incused indian designs first. my local coin shop dealer has some beautiful AU graded ones raw. they will have to take a back seat for now. looking to buy some more toned Canadian coins at the moment. lol
Only partially true. If you bought a coin like that what would you do with it? If you tried to sell it. You would be very hard pressed to get any profit at all and you may not even get the price you paid back. This was clearly an "Impulse buy", period. Live and learn, that's what we do here. Live and learn.
Glad you like it, -I would have held-out for something a lot nicer for $50 or $60 more. Problem-free VF/XF, that sort of thing.
This may sound odd (and don't get me wrong, I appreciate you guys' feedback), but although I most certainly paid twice what it's worth, I finally own a gold coin and that makes me ecstatic. I have an odd system of buying my coins. I rarely ever spend my actual income on my coins. The only money I ever really spend on things like this comes from selling other numismatic items on eBay (lots of world coins, fancy cerial banknotes, and error coins I find in my register at work). So all in all it's a self-sustaining hobby.
I do the same, but that is an odd way to think about it. If you make money from selling coins, it IS your actual income, that could be used for other bills, etc.
It may not be in the best condition, and you may have over-paid. Quite honestly, if you love it, I don't know if any of that really matters. As your first Gold Coin, it may just be something you hold onto forever, and at $113, it won't make or break you in the long run. I over-paid for my first $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle when I purchased it, and it is still in my collection today. I don't believe that collecting is necessarily about turning a profit. Enjoy it and congratulations!
